unctional ingredients are bioactive compounds that can be added to food, beverages and new delivery systems. They may support well-being and have a holistic approach thanks to unique nutritional values and benefi ts. Examples include vitamins, minerals,

botanicals, probiotics, omegas, fi bres, etc. Functional ingredients work beyond just basic nutrition and may also perform a particular role in foods such as a thickener, stabiliser or natural colourant for example. Isabel Gómez, Global Marketing Manager for LLS Health’s

nutraceutical business says: “Consumers have become more mindful of their health and wellness and want more from their everyday products. They want solutions that give them good taste and functional benefi ts. Whether it is the preference for a nostalgic experience or an out-of-the-box sensation, consumers will continue experimenting with confectionery that offers a range of tastes, textures, and aromas. Confectionery provides indulgence and consumers want to enjoy the full advantages instead of just consuming dietary supplements.”

Kennedy’s Confection May 2023 Confectionery products are also versatile delivery systems

to work with and can quite easily accommodate benefi cial nutrients such vitamins, minerals, botanicals and probiotics making it a great match. “Currently, mental and emotional wellness are trending in confectionery new product launches across the globe as consumers seek ways to reduce stress levels,” Isabel adds. The functional ingredient space is becoming more popular

and this is due to several factors. Firstly, there’s increasing awareness among consumers about their benefi ts. Consumers are now more interested in products that can offer additional nutritional value or specifi c benefi ts, such as improved digestion, cognitive function, or immune support. A representative from start-up CarobWay says: “A healthy

diet needs to fi t in with their busy on-the-go schedules and so will seek to consume these nutrients in convenient formats such as supplements, gummies, snack bars or shakes. This is what is driving the proliferation of the functional food sector. There is also growing scientifi c support on the benefi cial attributes of functional ingredients which is another key driver.”
