Established in 1966, Budd Electrical remains a family-run business, located on the busy A469, which links Cardiff and Caerphilly with Rhymney and the A465, the Heads of the Valleys Road. I was looking to buy a vacuum cleaner. Inside the store, I was met by Nick. I said I had heard about Sebo vacuum cleaners and was keen to know more about them.


Nick said that the store did not have any Sebo models in stock, but he referred to the internet and mentioned that the store, through its buying group, can get Sebo machines.

He said two models are available; the first was the X7 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner, which was priced at £299. Nick said the model also cleans flat to the floor, so it can clean under furniture as effectively as a cylinder vacuum. The second Sebo model was the Automatic X7 Pro ePower Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner) and was priced at £399. Nick added that both models come with a five-year guarantee.


John Lewis, The Hayes


This store opened its doors to customers on September 24, 2009, in the midst of the recession, and was the anchor shop of the St David’s 2 project.. I was looking to buy a coffee maker. Once I had


located the small domestic appliance department, I was greeted by Harry. He asked about my coffee drinking and I said I like big mugs of coffee, so he suggested that I look at Nespresso’s Vertuo machine. He said that Vertuo machines feature Centrifusion technology, a patented extraction method developed by Nespresso which reads each individual capsule to pour your desired cup size with perfectly formed crema every time. Harry said that the machine makes four different cup sizes – espresso 40ml, double espresso (80ml), gran lungo (150ml) and mug (230ml) – all at the touch of a button. There were two Vertuo machines that were discounted, and Harry highlighted that the cream model was priced at £99, while the black model was priced at £119. Harry added purchasers of

Audio-T, Crwys Road


This store is located at the junction of the busy Crwys Road and Dogfield Street, a residential street.. After burning my CD collection onto a NAS drive, I was looking top see how I could play my audio back. Inside the store, both salesmen were busy helping customers, so I browsed for a couple of minutes, and was then approached by Matt. He said that I could connect the NAS drive to a


Naim streaming system (Uniti Atom), which was priced at £2,499. Matt said I could then connect a pair of speakers to the Naim unit and he recommended a pair of Bowers & Wilkins speakers (706 S2), which were priced at £650.


I told Matt that the price of this system was a little


high, so he recommended a Marantz streaming hi-fi system (MCR612), which was priced at £749. For speakers, he


suggested


a pair of DALI speakers (Spektor 1), which was priced at £199.


Matt encouraged me to take my NAS drive to the store and connect it to the two devices to hear the sound for myself.

Harry was able to talk effortlessly about the machine and Nespresso, but he did not demonstrate or attempt to close the sale. The store looked good.


Currys, Newport Road


This store opened in July 2010 and, at the time, was one of the first stores in the UK to be co-branded, Currys and PC World.


I needed a new washing machine. Inside the store, I made my way to the home laundry department and walked past a number of staff, who didn’t approach me.


Inside the home laundry department, I started to browse the models on display. As I browsed, I counted 79 washing machines were on the shopfloor. In the absence of any staff, I found two models that I thought best suited my needs. The first was a 10kg model from Samsung (WW10T684DLH/S1), which was priced at £819. The second model I spotted was also a 10kg model, this one from Bosch (WAH32GH4GB), and it was priced at £1,149.


After five minutes of browsing, I headed to the exit. On the main aisle of the store, a member of staff walked straight into me as he frantically typed into his mobile phone.
