MERCHANT FOCUS: NU INDEPENDENT WHOLESALERS
FROM START-UP TO STANDOUT: THE FIRST AFFILIATE TO FULL NMBS MEMBER
NU Independent Wholesalers has become the first affiliate member to progress to full NMBS membership.

Minehead-based merchant NU Independent Wholsalers joined NMBS as an affiliate member in November 2024 and became a
full member in January 2026 following a year of strong growth and continued investment in the business.
Founded in 2019 by gas engineer James Cox, NU Independent Wholesalers was set up to bring a merchant to an area with limited local choice. Located 26 miles from the nearest other merchant, the business has built its reputation by focusing on what local installers and customers need and want most, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. The business started by stocking products that specialist plumbing, heating and electrical
trades already liked using, before gradually expanding the offer to meet additional customer demands.
The next stage of growth This steady growth has now led to a new location and the opening of a new bathroom showroom, which is already playing an important role in that next phase of development. As well as helping customers through the bathroom design process, the showroom has been created to offer inspiration that goes beyond brochures and catalogues.
One standout feature is a disabled bathroom display designed to show how accessible spaces can be stylish, practical and welcoming, rather than clinical. This focus is particularly relevant in a local area where the average age is around 65, and customers want to see what is possible and visually appealing to make their homes more accessible.
From affiliate to full Becoming part of NMBS had been a goal for NU Independent Wholesalers for some time. As a relatively young business without a long trading history, opening accounts and accessing competitive terms with some suppliers was a challenge. Becoming an affiliate member gave NU Independent Wholesalers a way to build those relationships faster, while also benefiting from NMBS rebates, trusted suppliers and a simpler route for managing invoices.
