The BMJ Index score is intended to give a snapshot of relative competitiveness between merchants. It is calculated by multiplying what we regard as the three most significant ratios: year-on-year sales growth, stockturn, and operating profit. Inevitably, at a time of general sales decline, that means most merchants will record a negative Index score, and this year’s analysis proves the point: 14 companies got a positive score, and 38 were negative. And it’s worth noting that the top six companies in this year’s table all have one thing in common – they have all physically expanded during the latest financial period – by acquisition, or by new branch openings, or by a combination of the two. In a falling market, there’s a clear moral there. Of those top six companies, five are independently owned. Just saying.
