Return on Capital

As always, this is the table to share with your bank manager and your shareholders. It shows that across the 46 merchants which recorded an operating profit in their latest financial period, the average return on capital was a healthy 13.4%. Across the top 10 in the list, the average ROC was a stonking 31.5%. And even across the bottom 10, the average ROC was still a respectable 3.5%. The message is clear: despite the downturn in sales, despite the pressure on margins, the merchant market is still a sound investment. Also worth noting that of the top 10 returners on capital, so to speak, 8 are independently owned.
