ECO-FRIENDLY

charity is City Harvest, who put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way. In a city as affluent as London, it is shocking to find that thousands of people go hungry each day. At the same time, it is such a waste that safe, healthy and usable food is being disposed of. City Harvest collects this nutritious surplus food from all over the food industry and distributes it to the needy; including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, children’s programs, centres for the elderly, and refuges for women experiencing domestic violence. This prevents food from going to landfills where it would then release greenhouse gases that lead to climate change. To date, they have redistributed food valued at more than £20 million, free, to their partners and offset over 27,000 tons of greenhouse gases.

What are consumers looking for in their products? DB: I think the analogy of ‘buy once, buy well’ is starting to resonate with consumers and this is where we want to position our designs. A particular favourite is our new microwave safe stainless steel Multi-Function Meal Prep containers because they are so versatile and practical. They can be used for meal prepping/batch cooking, as food storage to keep food fresh and as a lunch box, and all these uses help reduce food waste and single-use packaging.

How do you maintain the balance between style and sustainability? DB: We consciously try to give our designs a modern-retro appeal, so they are timeless and not influenced by fashion with colours or graphics which can become dated. If we have got the balance right, then our designs stand the chance of becoming the antiques of the future, where they can still be used for years to come and still have value, regardless of whether they are scratched or dented. We try to design products with ‘soul’, a product develops soul when it becomes a cherished go-to everyday item that the owner enjoys using for years.

Tell us about your eco charity partners. DB: As members of 1% for the Planet we are committed to donating 1% of our annual revenue to sustainable charities. Our primary

In terms of your sustainability commitments, how will you continue to evolve product portfolio? DB: We will continue to interrogate every new product that we consider launching and really evaluate the justification in bringing it to market. On the basis that every product we launch aims to help users be more sustainable, the more we get our products into the hands of users, the more beneficial environmental impact the product will have, so long as the customers keep and use the designs for a long period of time. Although this might sound financially driven, it will be more environmentally friendly if the product sells well and stays in our portfolio for as long as possible, so we need to make sure we get every new product right.
