Dan Black, co-founder and lead designer at Black + Blum, spoke to Housewares Magazine about the business’ sustainability commitments.
As a business, what are Black + Blum’s sustainability goals? Dan Black: To create products which are built to last, and help users lead a more sustainable lifestyle by reducing food waste and single use packaging. All the products are designed to function well and intended for everyday use; whether for your daily commute, or on a hike or picnic. By working well, users will enjoy using them and use them more often. We want the designs to stay functional as long as possible as this will have the biggest environmental impact. We keep spare parts of all components in case a certain part should be lost or break, and this means the product can work for longer without having to replace/discard the whole item.
Tell us about your environmentally friendly products? DB: All our designs are aimed at helping users to be more sustainable. There are so many companies green washing in this category and claiming designs are ‘green’. We know we are not going to shop our way out of the issues the environment is facing. When we produce any product, it is our responsibility to question whether the design should be produced and that it is up to our standards in terms of functionality and longevity. It is also then the user’s responsibility to use the product and look after it. We try to keep all our designs as minimal as possible and not include superfluous materials or features, as well as using sustainable and recycled materials where possible, for example our new
