Dimmer Switches

feature is available, for example, in our V-Pro dimmer series. Out of the box, a V-Pro dimmer will deliver the full range of brightness from any given dimmable LED load but the maximum brightness but the user also has the option of limiting the maximum brightness the dimmer will deliver. This feature can be used to improve the ambiance in a room and save energy. For example, a twenty percent reduction in the maximum brightness level can, for example, result in a similar percentage saving in energy consumption.

Remote Control Even the most basic remote control dimmers encourage lower energy usage, both by the user and in electricity! Lights that might otherwise be left on or left at full brightness can be controlled by users reluctant to leave their sofa at the end of a tiring day. With the advent of smart homes technology, more sophisticated dimming systems that can be controlled from a phone app have begun to appear in the market. Users are able to monitor the status of lighting in their homes, often including control from afar via the internet, and to dim or turn lights on and off remotely. Some systems also include the option to schedule lighting to be turned on or off according to a timetable. Although a feature like this is principally designed to simulate occupancy it can also be used to limit energy usage by turning lights off that might otherwise be left on unnecessarily.

Often systems like this can involve a significant

investment, but at Varilight we are putting the final touches on a new dimmer to be launched in the early part of next year that will include many of the features of the more expensive systems but be available at a sensible price and as a simple retrofit option. The new dimmer will also have the advantage of being powered by Varilight LED dimming technology which wholesalers know they can trust.

Longer Lamp Life A further advantage of a dimmer with a soft-start feature, such as any Varilight LED dimmer, is a longer lamp life. A measured increase in the power, gently bringing the lamp up to brightness, reduces the stress on the components within a lamp compared to switching on at full power.

Greener Product Sourcing So, the increasing focus on climate change presents wholesalers with an opportunity to promote the environmental and energy-saving benefits of products already in their portfolio such as the humble dimmer. Well-designed and well-priced new technologies can complement these products and offer the potential of a better energy performance whilst providing better margins for wholesalers. Wholesalers can also make greener choices by

carefully choosing manufacturers according to other environmental criteria. We at Varilight build our products to last, and have the confidence to

offer a 10 year guarantee reducing waste caused by product failure. We have also invested heavily in new packaging, which will reduce single use plastic waste by more than 80 percent. As a final thought, when considering the

environmental credentials of the products they range, and the marketing opportunities they provide, wholesalers may also want to consider the environmental impact of their supply chains. At Varilight we manufacture the vast majority of our products in the UK and in doing so our carbon footprint is reduced compared with many of our competitors who import finished products from the Far East. Sourcing from local manufacturers provides a number of advantages, such as security of supply and faster response times but with climate change set to dominate the political agenda in the coming decades as the UK seeks to meet is carbon commitments, the reduced carbon footprint of UK manufacturers will become an increasingly important additional benefit.
