he Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has announced the winners of both the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year award and CIBSE Employer of the Year awards at this year’s Young Engineers Awards. Raphael Amajuoyi was named 2017 Graduate of the Year after competing with seven other contenders by presenting for five minutes on the theme: Is engineering an art and should building services professionals be more creative in the way they approach projects? Raphael is a graduate of Loughborough University working as a consultant within the energy and sustainability development team at Hurley Palmer Flatt. His prize includes a trip to the ASHRAE winter conference in Chicago. The two runners up were Ana Recio of Arup and the University of the West of England and Kiyomi Honjigawa of Buro Happold and Heriot-Watt University, who received cash prizes of £600 and £300 respectively from the Rumford Club. The other finalists all


received cash prizes of £100 from the Manly Charitable Trust.

The evening also saw InTandem Systems awarded the overall CIBSE Employer of the Year accolade. InTandem won the small company category in the Employer of the Year; Elementa won the medium category and Norman Disney Young the large company category. The judges were impressed with InTandem’s structured approach to training and development and its apprenticeship programme which showed how seriously the business took its role in developing young engineers.

Winners were announced at a ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) headquarters in London. The evening also featured the IMechE annual lecture given this year by IMechE Construction and Building Services Division award winner Jo Harris from Eli Lilly. This was followed by the ASHRAE Presidential Lecture from Professor Bjarne W Olesen who spoke on the influence of occupant behaviour on energy use in buildings.

Government policy recognises hydraulic balancing as ‘expected pracce’


nsuring optimal distribution of water in a heating system offers savings of up to 27% of total heating costs,

independent studies reveal. This is known as hydraulic balancing, and last month, the UK Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy recognised it as “expected practice” in connection with installation or replacement of domestic heating systems. Pumps and pump systems specialist, Grundfos, welcomes the new policy and looks forward to the expected practice being embedded in relevant guides and industry commissioning checklists. The UK Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) announced plans to drive up standards for domestic heating systems at point of installation or replacement from April 2018. Alongside access to a range of installed energy saving measures, installers and consumers are set to be offered advice on a crucial element of heating system performance – the flow of water across each radiator (heat emitter) within the central heating system. Replacing a boiler or heating system

component represents a key opportunity to check that the entire system is working optimally. Hydraulic balancing can be delivered through a variety of different methods which all offer energy saving potential, if undertaken correctly. The work involved can be delivered by any competent Gas Safe technician at the same time as replacement of a boiler heating or other heating system component.

Grundfos UK Managing Director, Peter Reynolds, said: “The potential savings from Hydraulic Balancing are up to 27% of total heating costs, demonstrating that a little extra time during installation can yield long- term savings. Following the announcement from BEIS and the wide range of low cost methods available for optimising a central heating system, there really is no excuse not to provide such a valuable service to householders.” Grundfos will work with the Government and heating industry to ensure that this expected practice is instilled within relevant guides and industry commissioning checklists to ensure that consumers receive the service that means these savings are possible.

First ECS Registered Electrician cards have been issued


wo prominent members of the electrotechnical industry are among the first to sign up for the new ECS Registered Electrician status.

ECA President Mike Smith, bid director at SES Engineering, and Kevin Snowdon, owner of NES Electrical, applied after meeting the criteria and agreeing to the Code of Professional Practice. Operated via the ECS card scheme, the new status is available to all ECS Installation and Maintenance Electrician

cardholders who are qualified in the current (17th) edition of the BS7671 Wiring Regulations.

Registered Electrician cardholders will gain a well-deserved endorsement for their

professionalism and skills, stand out amongst their peers and get a valuable boost to their status and credibility. For more information visit: Funding boost for Manchester's Civic Quarter Heat Network

anchester City Council has secured £2.87m of grant funding from the Government’s national Heat Network Investment Project, for the Manchester Civic Quarter Heat Network.


Manchester is one of only nine local authorities to have won funding for their projects. The funding success advances the project, which will deliver significant carbon reductions over three decades.

Following the grant success, the council will meet the remainder of the programme investment. The project will become cost-neutral over the course of the scheme, with

the potential to generate revenue to fund future low-carbon, renewable initiatives.

The scheme has been designed with expansion in mind and as the network grows and more customers are connected, further capacity can be installed and the benefits increased.

Vital Energi has been appointed as preferred bidder to deliver the scheme, which will include a low- carbon energy centre and 2km district heating network connecting buildings including Manchester Town Hall & Extension, Manchester Central Convention Centre, Central Library, Manchester Art

Councillor Angeliki Stogia, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for the Environment and Skills, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Manchester to not only reduce energy costs and carbon emissions within the civic estate, but also to offer those same environmental and financial benefits to local businesses.”

All carbon and financial savings are guaranteed by Vital Energi under a 30-year energy performance contract, which includes operations and maintenance responsibilities for the duration of the contract.

uThe project includes a 40m flue, which will be a permanent addion to Manchester’s skyline.

Trend was exhibiting alongside sister company, Ex-Or by Honeywell, and showed how the two organisations work together to maximise comfort and productivity by controlling and monitoring all facets of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and lighting.

Now in its fifth year, Education Estates is the only event of its kind in the UK and covers the primary, secondary, further and higher education sectors. A key focus for Education Estates 2017 was the drive for greater efficiency and better asset management. Visitors to the Trend stand were told how a BEMS can minimise the risks

associated plant failure or environmental conditions falling outside acceptable parameters – events that can cause serious disruption to teachers, pupils and parents. Trend’s BEMS have been installed in many UK educational establishments.
