’ve been banging my drum about the skills gap in our sector for much of my tenure as BSEE’s editor and on my travels this year, I have been encouraged to see a number of manufacturers and industry bodies pulling together to offer

apprenticeships and train the building services engineers of tomorrow. It is also gratifying to see initiatives such as the BCIA Awards encouraging excellence and innovation. The government’s Apprenticeship Levy – introduced in April – aims to develop vocational skills and to increase the quantity and quality of apprenticeships. It has committed to an additional 3 million apprenticeship starts in England by 2020. It will be interesting to the impact that this will have on our own sector.

Meanwhile, as we went to press, we were awaiting Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Autumn Budget statement and, if the predictions are right, it could be a shot in the arm for the building industry, with a predicted 300,000 new homes on the

horizon, a possible retraining partnership between the TUC (Trade Union Congress), CBI (Confederation of British Industry) and the government and a predicted £76m to boost digital and construction skills. Focusing on sites where planning

permission has been granted, Philip Hammond said the government would use the "powers of state" to get "missing homes built" and it also plans to pay to clean up polluted industrial sites for house building, get town hall bosses to allocate land to small developers and guarantee loans by banks to smaller house builders. Let’s hope that Christmas comes early for our industry and we get the news that we want.

Why the renewables roadmap needs energy ecient heang

esearchers at Stanford University have announced the publication of a roadmap which would enable 139 countries to move to 100% renewable energy by 2050.i The predicted results of the 2050 roadmap are enormously significant, with claims that its implementation would avoid 1.5ºC of global warming and prevent 4-7 million premature air pollution-related deaths. Given that an estimated 45% of UK energy use is attributed to space heating, this area should be key to any energy reform roadmap.ii This is where radiators come in. For certain renewable technologies, such as ground or air source heat pumps, the choice of accompanying heating solution can be crucial to its energy efficiency. Historically, such systems are partnered with underfloor heating, as standard steel panel radiators struggle to provide the wide surface area necessary for effective heat distribution. However, whilst underfloor heating has its merits, the size of the area which is being heated means these systems can take up to four hours to reach the desired temperature. In a standard low temperature10kW system with a 45/35/20°C temperature profile, a wet underfloor system can use up to 29 litres of water, only to spend hours reaching the required temperature, and then hours to cool down again.


So, what is the answer to creating the efficient heating systems of the future? Low-H2O radiators with fan assisted technology are ideal for low temperature systems, for example, in a similar 10kW system, a Jaga Low H2O radiator requires just 3.2 litres of water – 90% less than an equivalent steel panel radiator. The aluminium and copper heat exchanger rapidly transfers the heat to the room taking only two minutes to warm up.


Studies by BRE (and more recently verified by Dutch body Kiwa) show that Jaga’s Tempo Low-H2O radiators consumed 5-16% less energy than a system with steel panel radiators, as they achieve the desired temperature more rapidly, and less heat is wasted through unnecessary over-heating. By utilising fan assisted DBE (Dynamic Boost Effect) technology, air flow and heat output levels are boosted to easily meet occupants’ temperature needs. This means that there is no need to compensate for the low water temperature system by radiator oversizing, making Low-H2O with DBE the perfect partner for heat pumps. By specifying Low-H2O models now, building managers can make the most of existing renewable solutions, or even make traditional systems more efficient. Whilst we may be at the beginning of the 2050 roadmap, there are already examples of how zero emission housing will work. For example, ground-breaking London-based development The Beacon in Hemel Hempstead, London, is offering residents zero energy bills as a result of technologies such as solar PV panels, ground source heat pumps, and rainwater harvesting. It is only a matter of time before developments such as this become commonplace. By considering the efficiency of every aspect of a heating system, from the energy source to the radiator, a solution can be developed which maximises current technologies, and paves the way for the zero-energy homes of the future. 2017/08/170823121339.htm
