COMPACT PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE SENSORS FOR BRITISH FORMULA STUDENT TEAM


Founded in 1981, Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational motorsport competition. Backed by industry leaders and high-profile engineers, the competition aims to support innovative young engineers and promote careers in engineering. Each team must design a race car from scratch as part of a design and business project that contributes to


their academic degrees. Participating students pitch their designs to experts at Silverstone, generating vital feedback that can help the teams improve their designs. In their final year of studies, the students can see their designs become reality as manufacturing of their race car commences. The teams then go on to compete against some of the best teams in the world at Formula Student events. The teams are assessed in six categories. Before being allowed to enter the dynamics competition, the judges subject each race car to a rigorous inspection process. This final stage of the competition usually


comprises 100 to 120 teams. Every year, “Team Bath Racing”


(TBR) from the Somerset-based University of Bath designs and builds its very own single-seat, open wheeled race car for Formula Student competitions. The 2017 team is comprised of 21 ambitious final year engineering students. This year’s race car “TBR17” has a lot to prove: Team Bath Racing currently ranks as the top Formula Student team in the UK and the sixth out of 550 teams worldwide. In the past, TBR won the title of best team in the UK in 2007 to 2009 and 2015 to 2016. Kistler has been sponsoring the Formula Student Team at the University of

DESIGN OF CUSTOM MOTOR TEST SYSTEMS

Dotstar Design has been chosen to design and develop a custom test system for Rotalink, who supply miniature motors, transmission and control from its base in Crewkerne. Dotstar will custom design modular


electronic hardware to control and monitor the performance of any DC or AC motor from the Rotalink product range during long term tests of more than 2,000 hours. The custom design has been selected over standard off the shelf test solutions because it will be specifically designed to meet the needs of the Rotalink product range and will enable Rotalink to provide world class test data to its customers - demonstrating to their customers their commitment to quality and meeting customer needs. Dotstar will use its expertise in high reliability electronics design and


distributed computing to run tests for long periods of time unattended, updating the Rotalink engineers via SMS and email alerts. The system will be supplied as a turnkey system, including an application that stores the test results on the Rotalink company server and allows live or historical data to be displayed and output for use in reports. Dotstar are designing the system to be expandable to support high


numbers of test stations, which can be of different types. This provides the possibility to add more test stations or different types of test in the future with minimal additional time and costs. www.dotstardesign.co.uk


ACCREDITED SOUND ABSORPTION TESTING


BSRIA has extended its scope of UKAS accreditation to include sound absorption testing in accordance with BS EN ISO 354:2003 and BS EN 11654:1997. BSRIA provides acoustic testing to determine the


sound absorption coefficient and rating of sound absorption for a range of materials including: insulation, carpets, wall panels, ceiling tiles and office screens. The sound absorption testing further extends BSRIA’s UKAS accredited acoustic testing services, which also


include determination of sound power levels in accordance with BS EN ISO 3741:2010 and BS EN 12102:2013. Testing is carried out in the BSRIA thermally controlled acoustic facility, which is a 210m3


reverberation chamber. Rebecca Hogg, acoustic consultant, who manages the


acoustic test facility, said: “The UKAS accredited sound absorption testing extends out existing acoustic services and provides the customer with the assurance they are getting internationally recognised quality test data. With an increased importance placed on acoustics in the built environment, it is essential that manufacturers, designers and installers have confidence in the acoustic performance data of sound absorbing materials.” The UKAS assessor said: “The laboratory has an excellent facility for the sound absorption measurements.” www.bsria.co.uk

Drivers Loic Duval and Jerome D’Ambrosio finished the season with six top-10 finishes between them, with Duval scoring the fastest lap at both Marrakesh and the first race at Montreal.
