Franchise Q&A Sarah Beattie
Managing director of Fun Fest Holiday Club
Q: Can I secure a better work-life balance by running a franchise business?
A: Franchising is a great way to take control of your own destiny and the range of opportunities available means that there will be something that suits your lifestyle requirements. Part-time franchises off er a particularly appealing combination of low startup costs, fl exible hours and the ability to work from home.
At Fun Fest Holiday Club, we knew
from the beginning that our commitment to fl exible hours was going to appeal to working mums, especially as the business also takes care of the childcare, but we have also found it to be a key motivating factor for a much broader spectrum of the population, too.

Q: Does it matter if I don’t have a large fi gure to invest? Is running my own business still a possibility?
A: The great thing about franchising is that there is a business out there to suit practically every budget. Franchises that ask for a relatively low amount of upfront funds tend to be owner- operator, or hands-on, opportunities, such as working with kids or photography. (These do, however, have the potential to grow into a management-style operation later on, where you will oversee staff who carry out the day-to-day work.) The costs can be kept low, as assets such as premises are not always essential. At Really Awesome Coff ee, for example,
the upfront investment can be as little as £9,000. While the total investment comes to around £80,000 (including vat) – which covers the mobile café itself – this can be fi nanced over the initial franchise term through an approved lender.
Nor does a small investment necessarily mean a modest return. Really Awesome Coff ee franchisees can see typical annual profi ts between £30,000 and £50,000 with many achieving much higher. The greatest benefi t of a lower-cost investment, of course, is that achieving a great work-life balance isn’t reliant on a high budget.
