“We’ve seen our turnover increase; our gross profit and net profit have both gone up too … we’ve got a bigger team all pulling in the same direction. I love the atmosphere we’ve created now”
Gary’s own journey in franchising From a multi-millionaire musician at 25 to a bankrupt business owner at 27, Gary Keating's life has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride – including failing to enjoy an early retirement! But the Bristolian entrepreneur who lost it all only to build an even bigger empire, found a new rhythm in the world of franchising. Gary is a testament to the
transformation that can occur when one combines self- awareness, hard work and the strength of a proven business model. Here, the ActionCOACH Bristol franchise partner, who regularly places in the top three partners globally, shares his story so other investors can reap the rewards of a franchise… “In 2011, at 47 years old, I decided to retire, having made enough money and achieved a great deal. I’d met my wife, Wendy, whilst she headed up my mortgage-broking business in Hong Kong. We decided to return to the UK and settle back home near Bristol, spending holidays in our house in Thailand. “I quickly realised I wasn’t
any good at being at retired! I tried spending time back in Hong Kong checking in on my business interests until a friend suggested I become a business consultant to fill my time. This didn’t appeal to me because when I’d used consultants, I’d often filed their reports in the back of a drawer and I felt it
would be hypocritical of me. But then I saw an advertisement for ActionCOACH in the Sunday Telegraph and, after some more research, their coaching system and values blew me away. “I’ve endured and enjoyed

a lifetime of good and bad in business. Sometimes I’ve worked almost 24-hours-a-day, seven- days-a-week to make a business work. I could see with clarity that ActionCOACH would work for business owners whether they were based in Hong Kong or Bristol.” Gary launched his
ActionCOACH business in February 2016, starting as he meant to go on. He immediately opened an office with a coaching studio, hired a personal assistant and created an environment with the opportunity for growth. “I followed the system myself
and in my first year had two members of staff, an employee coach and began recruitment for another employee coach for ActionCOACH one-to-one coaching. It’s no longer just me coaching in the business; we’ve created a team and systems to grow our business coaching firm. “We measure our success
by our clients’ success. Since our launch in 2015, we have seen our clients franchise their businesses, win awards for their work and massively increase their profits. As a small
business owner, you start your business to gain independence. But somewhere along the line you can lose track of what it is you’re trying to achieve. We’re passionate we can change the fate of business owners.” With a predicted turnover in
excess of £2million this financial year, Gary works just four days a week, enjoying the halfway house between retirement and full-time employment that he has created for himself. He still escapes the English winters in Thailand but continues his coaching via online video conferencing. “I often think if I’d had a
coach, I would have been much better at getting perspective on myself and my first business would have had a very different ending. The ActionCOACH system is brilliant.” If you want to build a business with scalability and longevity, make a difference in your local community and you: A) love learning and developing yourself;
