The NHS helps keep people as healthy as possible, and treats people when they’re ill. There are more than 350 careers in the NHS to make sure it runs effi ciently. We’re sure you’ll know about nurses, doctors, midwives and paramedics. But we also need audiologists, IT specialists, healthcare scientists, mental health practitioners, and podiatrists to name but a few.


Opportunities


The NHS has lots of different ways that you can start your career. If university feels the right option to aim for, you could study to become a nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist. Apprenticeships are a great option too and the NHS offers these at different levels – from level 2 (GCSE level) right up to levels 6 and 7 (degree and Master’s level). If you want to look for a job straightaway, an assistant, support or technician role is a great way to get started. Being in a job will mean you could be in the right place when a degree apprenticeship becomes available too.


Career progression


The NHS is a great place to grow and learn and once you’re in, we’ll be keen to support you to develop your career. You could move into a supervisor or manager position or get involved in research. Our pay progression is based on the knowledge, experience and skills you gain - another great reason to progress your career within the NHS!

Depending on what role you choose, you could work in any number of locations, for example a hospital, GP surgery, community clinic, pharmacy, mental health facility, prison, people’s homes or an ambulance service. Most staff in the NHS are on a national pay system called


Agenda for Change. Depending on your role, you could earn between £20,270 and £109,475 per year. If you are 16 to 18 or 19+ and in your fi rst year of an apprenticeship, you’ll receive at least £4.81 an hour the ational Minimum Wage for apprentices.
