Careers in Orthoptics: If you enjoy science, working with people of all ages and the challenges of problem solving and making decisions independently, Orthoptics could be the career for you! Orthoptists are eye care specialists who diagnose and manage eye movement problems affecting how the eyes work together, known as binocular single vision.


Studying Orthoptics: The undergraduate degree is a full-time three-year course (four years in Scotland), including clinical placements at different hospitals where you learn and develop your clinical skills, assessing and managing patients as well as developing the interpersonal and communication skills to enable you to provide excellent patient care. You will study subjects relevant to orthoptics including anatomy, physiology, ocular conditions and diseases, optics, and research.


Employability


Studying Orthoptics is interesting and challenging with excellent employment opportunities. The qualifi cation is recognised worldwide and over 90 of orthoptic graduates fi nd employment within six months of graduation with most being employed in the NHS, where there is an established career structure. Career progression depends on gaining experience and expanding your role within the eye care team.

Funding your studies: Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for a grant, bursary, or loan to help fund your study and enhance your learning experience. Orthoptics students at Universities in England qualify for at least £6,000 per year from the NHS Learning Support Fund.


Career progression


Orthoptists can progress into more senior positions and clinical management as their clinical experience develops. Many orthoptists also take on one or more specialist roles.

requirements for an undergraduate degree are that you must have good GCSE Maths, English and Science grades and A Levels/Highers or equivalent, with at least one science subject, such as Biology, Maths, Physics or Chemistry.
