The application process
“
There will be sessions where potential students can ask lecturers or current atendees about the course they are interested in, and make wider enquiries about what the university and the town have to offer
paragraphs so that the statement flows well and it’s easy to identify key points. If you’re going to be interviewed, the interviewer will read the statement beforehand and may even refer to it during the interview, so a well-structured statement is imperative.”*
Options spoke to a number of admissions tutors and sixth-form careers advisers for general advice on approaching the statement. Among their words of wisdom were: Say why you want to study this subject. What have you done that reflects your interest?
Be passionate, and upbeat – we want to know what you will bring with you
Don’t try to impress with over- flowery language – be clear and concise; making it easy to read and understand will impress
For goodness’ sake, do write it yourself – don’t cut and paste a template or get a parent or older friend to do it – it shows!
Plagiarism UCAS can, and do, run applications through detection software. Its site states: “We run similarity detection checks and report to universities if any similarities between personal statements are identified, which could result in an offer not being made.” So, just like telling even the littlest of white lies on any kind of form,
it won’t pay off and it’s not worth taking the risk!
Open days The uni(s) in question will have open days and it’s a good idea to go along to see what the campus, the course environment and tutors are like. There will be sessions where you can ask lecturers or current attendees at the university about the course, and make wider enquiries about what the university and the town have to offer. It’s a much more ‘real’ experience than anything that can be found in a prospectus, and it’s certainly worth doing.
