What qualifications will I get with an advanced apprenticeship? You’ll come across the phrase ‘earn while you learn’ a lot. It’s a neat way of summing up the benefits of apprenticeships. The combination of paid employment, some work- based learning – such as a Level 3 competence qualification – developing functional skills (the job you’re training in) and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification. It’s the equivalent to gaining two A level passes! On completion, you are eligible to move on to the higher apprenticeship programme.

Intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2) Employers might ask for you to have at least two or more GCSE grades (9-4) or equivalent. For some intermediate apprenticeships, however, you might not need any formal qualifications, but if you haven’t achieved English and maths at GCSE, you might have to complete tests that show you possess a certain level of numeracy and literacy.
What qualifications will I get with an intermediate apprenticeship? Qualifications gained during the intermediate stage are not inconsiderable! They include a Level 2 competence qualification, a functional skills qualification and a relevant knowledge- based qualification. The Level 2 qualification will usually be an NVQ at Level 2, which is equivalent to five GCSEs grades at 9-4. In addition, you might also work towards a BTEC, GCSE, or City & Guilds qualification. On completion, you’re
eligible to move on to an advanced apprenticeship.
Advanced apprenticeship Generally lasting around 24 months – although they can be longer or shorter – this is the second most popular apprenticeship after intermediate. A huge variety of different
employers offer advanced apprenticeships. Companies might run their programme in partnership with a training provider (like a further education college), meaning you’ll split your time between working at the company and attending college, or the employer will run it independently and have their own in-house training sessions.
What qualifications do I need to do an advanced apprenticeship? Generally, to be eligible to embark on on an advanced apprenticeship, you need either to have completed an intermediate apprenticeship already or otherwise hold a certain number of GCSEs (or equivalent).
Higher apprenticeships This apprenticeship leads to a Level 4 or above qualification, which is the equivalent of a higher education qualification (for context, the AS and A levels are Level 3).
