No gimmicks needed


like a beer (it’s no secret)… on the other hand, I’m also a lady. Thank goodness, then, that Brewdog, makers of Punk IPA, recently bottled a special, rosy-labelled beer for women, Pink IPA, priced at a fifth less than its Punk counterpart to reflect the gender pay gap. Their hearts (and hops) were in the right place; this was a tongue-in-cheek dig at cheesy marketing aimed at women (ie the pink label), plus the on-sale price drew attention to equality (shifting quantities of their craft ale was just a handy side effect). The gimmick came in for a lot of stick on social media though, the message being “just because we’re women doesn’t mean we need our own special girly beer – even if it’s a joke”. (I imagine no one at HQ is crying into their artisan ale glassses, though, since all publicity is good publicity.) But taking the sentiment of ‘no special treatment’ to its logical conclusion should mean that, for instance, this month’s Women in Franchising feature is redundant. I recently enjoyed a robust debate with an industry colleague about whether forums that serve to encourage a female presence in business should even exist at all (personally, I think they can be a force for good). Perhaps one day there will be no need to single out women and their stories since they will be as commonplace as men’s, but in the meantime, I’m glad to


share their stories (see pages 27 to 33). Not without a strong sense of irony do I turn now from women at work to the next subject featured this month: cleaning. (In fact, three-quarters of the representatives from this industry that we talked to were male.) Whether it’s managing a crack team of domestics or presiding over a commercial cleaning franchise that has contracts with offices, schools and hospitals throughout a region, this recession-proof sector has much to offer anyone considering starting their own business. Turn to page 49 for facts, figures and some real-life insights.
