Franchise Q&A

Tim Morris

UK company manager, Tutor Doctor

Q: How do I know a franchise brand’s sector or service will be right for me and my circumstances?

A: Depending on where you live, and what you are looking to gain from running your own business, there are questions you need to ask both of yourself and the brand you are considering investing in. Consider fi rst and foremost – are you looking to escape the nine-to-fi ve and to restore some work-life balance? Some franchises, particularly those that are premises-based, will still require that you put in considerable hours and weekends – perhaps longer than you might in the offi ce. This, however, is often with a view to eventually hiring staff who will carry out day-to-day operations for you. There are, however, other businesses that are tailored towards family-friendly hours, or where you can eventually consolidate your workload into a shorter week. A franchisee will always have to work hard to make their business a success, regardless of sector, but the franchise concept does off er freedom and fl exibility as one of its major advantages. Secondly, is the audience or market for your franchise product or service

plentiful in your area? Whether it’s garden maintenance, healthcare or a food retail outlet, you will need a solid customer base. Also, is it seasonal (not a bad thing per se)? Or catering to year-round custom? Are you able to accommodate this? Either way, the most important question should be: is it in a growth market? At Tutor Doctor, our business model is designed to enable franchisees to work in any of the markets available within a territory, or territories, delivering tuition tailored to client needs and schedule. Providing a service for any age and subject frees the franchisee of any restriction to only service a small demographic. According to recent research, the demand for private tuition has increased by 10 per cent in the past decade and growth shows no signs of slowing. In terms of work-life balance, franchisees manage their diaries around the hours that suit them, and the business is fl exible enough to be run from home since Tutor Doctor franchisees employ tutors rather than teach the clients themselves.
