PGCE Secondary (11–16 years) with Post-16 enhancement (including School Direct) A UK bachelors degree (or equivalent) of which approximately 50% is related to the relevant subject – or a recognised equivalent qualification. You will also need GCSEs (or a recognised equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 (or C) or above on enrolment. You may also need to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course if your degree does not directly link to your chosen teaching subject.

Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) If your course or your placement involves working with children or adults at risk, you will need to apply, through Birmingham Newman, for an Enhanced Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). There is an initial fee of £61 for this. If you already have a valid Enhanced Disclosure and have paid the annual subscription fee of £13, you will need to show your DBS clearance and provide a link to your online DBS record. Fitness to Train to Teach All universities have to ensure that entrants on Initial Teacher Education courses have met the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental capacity to teach. Master’s degrees
You will normally be expected to have an honours degree. Of course, you must be able to demonstrate commitment to pursuing your studies at a higher level. Additional entry requirements may vary for each course, and can be found on the relevant course pages.
Research degrees
Students studying for a research degree at master’s level will normally have a first class or 2:1 honours degree in a subject relevant to the research proposal.
