What our course levels mean These are the course levels Birmingham Newman University offer.


Subject entry requirements are on the course pages. If there are additional requirements these can be found on pages 92-95.

Master’s Degree

A Master’s Degree is a postgraduate qualification demonstrating mastery or higher understanding of a specific field of study.


Postgraduate Diploma


A shorter vocational postgraduate course which provides specialist training in a specific area of medicine or life science.


Qualification Foundation Year


The foundation year offers an innovative pathway, designed to support students onto their degree of choice by building confidence and developing academic skills.


This year is integrated as part of our Undergraduate offer for those students who feel it would be beneficial.


Undergraduate Degree


Undergraduate degrees, otherwise known as first degrees, typically span three years and cover one level per year!


This includes accelerated degrees and part-time degrees, even though the time spent studying differs slightly.


Foundation Degree


Foundation degrees are work-related awards designed in consultation with employers, allowing students to develop the relevant skills and knowledge required in specific fields.


Top-Up Degrees


Top-Up Degrees offer a progression route from any level 5 qualification to a full honours degree.


PGCE


A postgraduate course which provides training for an individual to become a qualified teacher.


Postgraduate Certificates


A shorter taught postgraduate course which provides specialist training in a specific area of medicine or life science, but takes a shorter time to complete.


These can be used towards a PG Dip and a Master’s degree in some cases.


Doctorate


This is the highest degree you can earn within an academic field or profession; it shows your expertise in a subject alongside supporting career advancement.
