Postgraduate Research Areas
A Postgraduate Research degree is a research project that makes an original contribution to knowledge in a particular area of study. At Birmingham Newman you will be guided and supported by an academic expert.
PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
A PhD is the traditional doctoral research degree. This is awarded to students that have demonstrated the ability to design and implement a large research project that results in greater knowledge and understanding in their field of study.
M Phil (Master of Philosophy)
This can be described as a shorter version of a PhD. The qualification requires the same research, training, and planning.
At Birmingham Newman, research is regarded as an integral part of our scholarly activities. Cutting-edge work is being undertaken across a wide range of academic and professional disciplines and is attracting national and international research funding. Research projects and collaborations with leading universities, at home and abroad, have been established in several areas.
Education, Multi Professional Practice and Early Childhood
Staff are active in several areas of research and in scholarship. Research interests include educational policy; learning theory; curriculum; safeguarding; creativity and imagination in education; and early childhood education and care.
English
English at Birmingham Newman is a thriving research area with expertise in colonial and postcolonial literature, twentieth-century and contemporary writing, language, drama and print culture. As well as giving papers at national and international conferences, the team host a

research seminar series and regularly organise conferences. In addition to publishing articles, editing essay collections and literary texts, members of the team are also contracted for monographs with Cambridge University Press, Taylor and Francis, and Palgrave-Macmillan. English staff at Birmingham Newman work with published writers and dramatists to enhance regional and national literary and performance culture.
History
History at Birmingham Newman is a very successful area in terms of academic research. There is a strong research ethic within the team, who consistently produce internationally- recognised publications. Expertise within the subject team covers a number of diverse areas: the ancient Roman world, the medieval world, early modern Britain, and modern America. All academic staff are active in their fields, attending national and international conferences, hosting conferences at Birmingham Newman and publishing widely. The History team has a proven track record in supporting postgraduate students with successful MPhils and PhDs. The supervision teams are interdisciplinary and work closely with colleagues across the Humanities.
Initial Teacher Education
Staff in the ITE department are engaged in a range of research and scholarly activities focussed on issues in education and the teaching and the development of teacher knowledge and professional learning. Research is being disseminated locally, nationally and internationally through conferences, national projects and local partnerships.
Psychology and Counselling
The Psychology and Counselling area at Birmingham Newman has a focus on issues around health, well-being, clinical and applied psychology, counselling and psychotherapy - for example, students’ health risk perception,
