Education, Childhood and Professional Studies
Overview
The suite of degrees within the Education, Childhood, and Professional Studies department offer a range of ways to study education as an academic discipline. Our courses provide you with an understanding of education from a sociological and philosophical perspective, providing you with the skills and knowledge to continue into a range of career opportunities, including social work, working in early years and teacher training in a number of settings. Other career opportunities might include working in further education, charities, hospitals and professional services in roles such as outreach or education coordinators.
Early Childhood Studies
Early childhood, the quality of education, provision and care, and the roles and responsibilities of all those involved with young children, parents and families, all have a significant influence on children’s achievement and life chances. The last decade has seen the wider development of early years provision, changes and challenges in aspects of education and care, and the recognition that early childhood and children’s experiences must be supported by a highly qualified workforce.
The Bachelor’s degree is registered with the DfE as having ‘full and relevant status’, advantageous in early years settings in counting towards the staff:child ratios.
Studies in Primary Education
This hugely popular course draws upon psychology, sociology and philosophy to take an applied approach to understanding how we
can improve the education system and make positive change in the world. You will work alongside inspiring academics and supportive students to develop your critical thinking, communication, and creativity whilst forming lifelong friendships through engagement in collaborative projects exploring how we can develop the education system to address the challenges of the 21st century.
Education and SEND
This course reflects the many changes within the education sector, including a deepening awareness of the need to better prepare practitioners to support SEND and children’s mental health. You will consider the range of issues and perspectives involved when working with children and young people in education and wider settings, and particularly those with a range of diverse needs. Exploring policy, theory and practice, you will consider the challenges to inclusive approaches to education, as well as wider educational theory relating to social justice.
Postgraduate Study
Our postgraduate degrees allow you to continue your study of education. Whether you are a teacher, early years practitioner, school leader, academic, corporate client with educational outreach programmes, or from another discipline such as health and psychology, you can find the right postgraduate programme for you.
