The subject area has major strengths in the teaching of professional courses in counselling, psychotherapy and applied aspects of psychology, and this drives the research agenda.
Sport and Health
The Sport and Health subject area is an active and successful research group at Birmingham Newman. There is a strong research ethos, with a highly committed team of early career and experienced researchers. The scholarly work of this enthusiastic team involves: physical activity and health-related behaviours of young people and adults; socio-cultural experiences within sport; physiological and psychological aspects of sports performance, as well as influences on sports officials, the biomechanical perspective on performance improvement and reduction of injury and creativity within teaching styles.

Theology
Research supervision for PhD/MPhil awards (both full and part-time) is offered in a number of areas of theology, particularly Christian theology. Current staff research interests include biblical studies, early post-biblical Judaism, patristics, contemporary philosophical theology, the history of philosophy and ethics. The team are also able to work with those wishing to apply theological reflection to their ministry or professional practice. Creating strong support networks for students and building good relationships between staff and students is at the heart of the approach to study.
