MAKER’S PROJECT
Placemat Bergère (part one) by Martine Henry
From hobby makers to commercial enterprises, it is a particular skill of the milliner to see value in the most humble materials. Not only can this prove to be cost effective when it comes to sourcing, it can also spark creativity, bring uniqueness to your designs and, of course, form part of an effort to incorporate sustainability into your practice.
In this tutorial, Martine from Martine Henry Millinery demonstrates how to turn a placemat into an elegant bergère hat. While mat hat bodies can be sourced from millinery suppliers, the mat for this project was purchased from a home store, where a pack of four mats cost £4.00.
