HAT ANATOMY
Every hat has a story – not only in its style, but in its structure. In this regular feature, we take a vintage hat and explore it up close, looking beyond the surface to understand how it was made. By examining original examples, we uncover practical knowledge that can inform and inspire today’s hat making.
Crin & braid headpiece
This small sculptural headpiece is a bandeau-style cocktail hat, most likely dating to the mid- to late 1950s or early 1960s. Such lightweight, decorative pieces became particularly popular during this period, especially for summer wear, when transparency and delicacy formed part of the aesthetic.
