NHV Hat Competition
The third prize was awarded to Suzanne Jonker for her hat entitled Gestrikt!, which means ‘tied’, ‘laced’ or ‘snared’ in English. The hat was made from lamb’s leather, felt, sinamay, millinery wire and glass beads. Suzanne’s entry echoed the silhouette of a bold cowboy hat, featuring a sinamay crown to keep the head cool and airy. Bows created using Canadian smocking on leather added refined textural detail.
The first prize was awarded to Mirjam van der Welle for her hat, Flow, made from sinamay, satin organza, crinoline, Flex, wire and pearls.
Mirjam designed a bridal fascinator consisting of graceful, light forms that echoed the lines of her chosen dress. “My piece was inspired by a visit to the Iris van Herpen exhibition at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam and is made for a bride who dares to claim her space and wants to move in flow on her wedding day.”
Widely regarded as one of the most challenging competitions in the Dutch Hat Association’s 22-year history, the theme of this year’s annual event, ‘Say Hat to the Dress’, gave participants the opportunity to push their creativity to the highest level. Reversing the accepted trend of hats being worn
as accessories to clothing, competitors were instead asked to create hats that were statement pieces in their own right, inspired by one of three unique ‘dream bridal gowns’. The entries were whittled down by the jury (which changes each year) to a final ten, with hats selected for their technical mastery, wearability and elaborate detail. Each of the ten finalists took part in a hat show and exhibition, where they presented their work to both the public and the jury, explaining how they arrived at their designs.

The second prize went to Saar Snoek for a piece entitled Hebban alla vogala (All Birds Have), made from crin, laize, veiling, millinery wire and sinamay. Saar’s piece was inspired by one of the earliest known sentences in Dutch literature about love: “All birds have begun their nests, except you and me. What are we waiting for?”
