14 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, April 24th, 2008 Possible solution
to TIC problem so, the borough council has been “left in the lurch” with respect to the
Tourist Information Centre in Clitheroe. I t seems most strange to me that a
Labour-controlled (I do not use the adjective “socialist” nor “pseudo socialist” ) county council, in these times when we are supposed to be multiculturalising, should chooses to close a major avenue by which people of all varieties passing through the wonderful Ribble Valley find out about the wonders of the Lancastrian lifestyle. I have a fairly simple solution. Our
caring, inclusive and increasingly out- of-touch Labour government, much like the other opposition parties, sees the value of volunteers! I do not take the cynical view that the only motive here is saving money; like a good old- fashioned socialist I look for the posi tives, the development pf the individ ual. I am not yet totally as cynical as my hero Braverman! Well, where I have a small house
(not a chateau believe me) in Brit tany, we have a “Syndicat d’lnitia- tive” (Tourist Information Bureau) in the town; a town of approximately 2,500 inhabitants. But it only opens in the season and it is operated by vol unteers. In my various wanderings around
France with my wife and son I have found this to be typical. Try the one in Vallet and then go around the won derful domaines producing Mus- cadet! Then learn that there is more than one variety of Muscadet. There are many students in the
neighbouring colleges and universities who follow travel and tourism cours es. I know because I have taught some of them and moderated some of
■ their coursework in the past. Some of these students might have some loy alty to this area and would work for minimal or no pay, especially as they are able to place it on their CV. Of course I realise that in the Rib
ble Valley, where capitalism is king, this may be a probleni, but then again the volunteers who did operate the bureau might well be the ones with some enthusiasm, rather than the grabbers. I really must try to stop sounding
like a wizened old twozzer, for once I am trying to be constructive, believe me!

Why should writer
mention terror? I WAS sorry to read a letter in your paper from the Reverend Canon Dr Peter Shepherd chiding the leader of Clitheroe’s Muslim community for failing to take advantage of a short.

service you gave WHAT to do? Where to go? What to see? When to go? How to get there? Who to ask? The answers to these, and many
more frequently asked questions have always been found in one place in Clitheroe. We’ve used the Tourist Informa
tion Centre over the years for many purposes; finding a wealth of infor mation and services there. We’ve booked tickets for local
productions and performances, gained an insight into local organi sations from the window displays, purchased postcards and gifts to send to family and friends around the world, planned days out for vis itors to the Ribble Valley, and much, much more. The supportive leaflets available
from the tourist information have guided us to hitherto unkown cor ners of the Ribble Valley, promot ing local products and services in the process. And now, the Ribble Valley Food
Trail Leaflet has hit the headlines nationally, with a full page in the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, plus a programme on BBC Radio 4, to say nothing of a renowned local chef and.butcher on televi-
learned article on the treatment of orphans as an o p portunity to denounce terrorism. By chance, a t the same time as Mr
Arshad published his art ic le on orphans, I published a rather less learned one on the treatment of fun gal infections in hedge plants. I did not use it to denounce terrorism either, but I am not a Muslim so the Rev. Canon did not feel the need to chide me. With all the respect I can muster,
might I suggest that Dr Shepherd concentrates his attention on the unfortunate fact that there has not been a serious conflict in Europe for the past several hundred years in which the Christian churches of each belligerent have not supported the killing done by their armed forces. As for Mr Arshad, no one who has
ever encountered him could imagine, for a moment, that he has the slight est need to distinguish himself from wrongdoers.

all who helped I WOULD like to say a big thank-
you to the people who came to help me last week when I fell in Henthorn Road, the two skateboard boys Daniel - who rang for an ambulance - and Dillon, and the lady who stopped her car and stayed until the ambulance came (she didn’t tell me her name). Thanks also to all the relations,
friends and neighbours who have helped me or offered help, to the ambulance crew and not forgetting the staff at the A&E at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. Bless you all.

Carer Katie had a
sion. Let’s not forget our NOW cards, which enable us to travel freely around the area and beyond. We also have our Senior Citizen’s
Railcards, which take us further afield, from stations on our doorstep, thanks to the exemplary service offered by the staff'at the railway station. In the light of all the above, with
the Ribble Valley well and truly “on the map”, how ironic is it that we will be losing our high profile, accessible, effective “shop window” for Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley at the end of this week, and with it.
Sad to hear news
of Derek’s death IT is with sadness that I read of the passing of “Mr Cinema,” Derek Pearson, the former projectionist at the old Civic Hall Cinema. You rightly note his more than a
“Brief Encounter” with cinema in Clitheroe. I was proud to tackle the same for
midable 35mm projector, now locat ed at the Parish Hall, for the two- and-a-bit years tha t Ribble Film Club (RFC) showed films from round the world. I t is with sadness as well that cine
ma has also passed in Clitheroe after such an illustrious history here. There are moves by RFC to have
a final screening in the not too dis tant future at the parish hall with the emphasis on the golden age of cinema. It might just be that there is suffi
cient enthusiasm a t th a t time to form a nucleus of support to recreate cinema on a more permanent basis
that treasure trove of information that comes from the knowledge and experience of the staff there. For the help cheerfully and pro
fessionally offered over many years, by the tourist infomation staff, past and present, we should all say a big thank you for the splendid service you have provided. You have been greatly valued and you will be sadly missed.

Is this pampering
really necessary? FROM recent casual observation, there is soon going to be “standing room only” in the waiting room at the health centre. A new annex will have to be added
to contain the lengthening queues for tablets and pills at the prescrip tion counter. And the blood clinic is sending off so much blood to be analysed at Blackburn it is surpris ing there is any blood left over for blood transfusions. Our grannies and grandads lived

Once so lovely,
now just a dump MY husband and I have lived in Barrow for 54 years. It was a pleasure to live here once. I worked at the print works for a
number of years. It was well main tained, we were not allowed to throw rubbish about. Not like McDonald’s and Somerfields - the bins always overflowing and the rubbish all over the area, polluting the lodge and the stream that runs through the village. Then to add more, the new age
travellers’ camp and the human excrement left behind. Sadly, Barrow has become a
dumping ground for unwanted hous es and still they want to build more, causing more traffic problems and overcrowding the school.
