Marathon China trek in memory of Christine
A VALLEY councillor is preparing to tackle rocky paths in a foreign climate in memory of his much-loved wife. Coun. Robert Thompson (59), of
Wiswell, will lace up his walking boots next month to take part in the epic Great Wall of China trek to boost funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The unforgettable five-day adventure
will take him through spectacular scenery ranging from woodland and ter raced farmlands, unforgiving mountain ranges and harsh deserts. Coun. Thompson is looking forward
to exploring this man made wonder of the world and is hoping to keep the memory of his late wife, Christine, who died of lung cancer in January 2005, alive by raising £6,000 for the charity. He is hoping Ribble Valley folk will
rally behind him and help him reach his target. He said: “I’m very excited. The
amazing challenge will give me the opportunity to trek for five days along the steep and arduous paths of the Great Wall and its surrounding coun tryside. “In the next few weeks I am dedicat
ing myself to getting fit for the trip and to raising much-needed funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of Chris tine. This charity is making a real dif ference to the lives of people with can cer and their families across the UK every hour of the day.” He added: “I have committed to raise
a minimum of £2,700 and I would like your support in reaching my personal
target of £6,000. All funds raised will go to the charity as I am paying for all the expenses of the trek myself.” Coun. Thompson is one of six men on
the challenge, the other 32 are all women! “I am confident that I will enjoy the
trek and cope rvith the women without a problem! I have already met many of them as we all took part in a training weekend in Wales, which was fun.” The trek takes place between May
17th and 25th. Anyone wishing to spon sor Coun. Thompson can log on to

contrary to the Environmental Protec tion Act 1990. Coupland was fined £500 for each offence. Magistrates agreed that he could pay the fine in instalments of £100 over the course of 10 months. The farm is located within the Forest
of Bowland Area Of Outstanding Natur al Beauty. Coupland admitted dumping household waste at the farm, including upholstery, a barbecue, fridge, plastic plant pots, conservatory chairs, skirting board and even a kitchen sink. Investigating Officer for the Environ ment Agency, Jackie Monk, said: “There
is no excuse for what Mr Coupland did. Even though the land where he dumped the waste is his own, fly-tipping is still against the law. “The Forest of Bowland is noted for its
outstanding natural beauty and is appre ciated by numerous visitors who use the many public footpaths in the area. This prosecution will hopefully deter others who think they can fly-tip and get away with it.”
