Captain signs off

in style Clilheroe CamUers .44 Preston Grasshoppers? THE last league game of the season saw mid table Preston Grasshop pers arrive at Clitheroe in holiday mode, having arrived in fancy dress, believing they already had it in the bag. The Cavaliers had

other ideas and from the off, playing with the wnd, the Cavaliers kept the Grasshoppers in their half with probing kicks from fly half Kino. At scrum time, the

front row of Proctor, Rawstron and Jefferson, who was playing his last game as captain, demol ished their opposition in tine fashion. This provided a great

platform for back row players Curphy, Holmes and Thatcher to make powerful runs at the

enemy. Linking neatly with

the back line through the deft hands of scrum halt Watson, the three- quarters were rampant. First half scores came

through Kino, Keough and Bicky. All were con verted by Kino, who also managed to score two penalties to add to his tally. The Cavaliers were

also dominant in the line out, with the Cowgill brothers cream ing most of the ball, which allowed the for wards to set up strong driving mauls. At half-time, Jeffer

son made his final war cry, asking the home team to maintain the same effort, as he knew from experience that the Grasshoppers would come back fired up. To their credit, the

Grasshoppers did just that and showed what a class team they are and at ruck time they were devastating. The Cavaliers were

under sustained pres sure on their try line for a good 20 minutes, dur ing which time they lost their heads and two players received yellow cards. Clitheroe stuck to

their task valiantly but they could do nothing to stop the pick and drive from the base of a ruck and the try was awarded by the well- placed referee. When the two players

returned, it was back to business for the Cava liers as tries were scored through Keough and Bicky, who picked up his hat-trick. A great game by the

kC

Cavaliers ended an enjoyable season, which proved a fitting tribute to Jefferson, who has served the team well for the last three seasons.

Rimington dosing in on league title

Colne...............................0 Riminglon ...................3 RIMINGTON are were just one win away from securing the Bast Lan cashire Football League title following this victory at a windswept Holt House on Saturday. The conditions made

flowing football almost impossible, but the locals, with the wind at their backs, created several chances to put the game away, to have only one goal to show for their efforts, which Dinsdale forced home. Paton and Dinsdale

both had efforts ruled put for off-side, and O’Neill should have scored from close range after the keep er had blocked Paton’s shot, but somehow hit the keeper’s body with his shot. Playing into the strong

wind in the second half showed how good Riming ton can be as they forced Colne’s back four to turn and face their own goal.

RAMPANT Rimington enjoyed one of the most one-sided semi-finals in Craven Cup history to convincingly march into the final. The writing was on the

wall early on as the locals almost scored in the first minute ' when Paton dragged his effort wide, but he made amends soon after as Penman and O’Neill combined to set him up to stroke home. Penman again had the

ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for off side, before he threaded a

ish just before half-time. In the second half, Rim

ington were much better, even if not at their best, and the game was over as a contest when Penman hammered home from close range, before Alan Sayle made it four soon after. Manager Terry Braith-

waite seized the opportuni ty to rest Penman, Sayle and Mankowski, as Law- son, Curtis and Hartle- bury came on. Paton had several

chances to claim his hat- trick, but he was denied by

item saw Curtis cut out a pass and race through before slotting the ball home, much to the delight of everyone. Terry Braithwaite was

satisfied with his team’s work, but insists the final will be a different affair as they take on Ingleton tomorrow at Barnoldswick (kick-off 6-30 p.m.), ask ing supporters to turn up in force and back his side against a strong, physical team that knocked out Barnoldswick on penalties.

llursl Green..................2 LEAGUE champions

Hurst Green bounced back in style following their dis appointing defeat at Rim ington with a gritty win over mid table Worsthorne. Again manager Steve

Young was forced into changes as the visitors reverted to an orthodox 4- 4-2, with Danny Taylor returning, but Seedall absent through illness. Green’s back four were

immediately under pres sure, as the home side looked sharp. Worsthorne wasted a

good chance when Young picked up a Danny Walker back pass, but their indi rect free kick came to nothing. However, it was the visi

tors who took the lead against the run of play, as Simpson chased down a seemingly lost cause to beat the keeper to the ball and finish from an acute angle. Worsthorne continued

to pre.ss, and should have done better on a couple of occasions as they dragged shots wide, and Young kept them at bay to lead at half time. Conditions worsened in

the second half but Green’s defensive qualities came to

the fore. Worsthorne had shots

from distance which didn’t really trouble Young, but Green struggled at times

nents’ halt. Walker had a good

opportunity to double Green’s lead following neat play from Ian Simpson, but his shot flew over. Hurst Green had shouts

for a penalty turned down as Walker was seemingly held back, and they brought on fresh legs in the form of Dave Young and Dan Wilkinson for his first start this season, the latter creating Green’s second goal. Wilkinson got to the

bye-line and pulled the ball back for Walker to rifle into the bottom corner. A first clean sheet since

early February was a huge plus for Green, in what was a very competent defensive performance.

play on the edge of the box saw Fordham release Danny Austin with a won derfully disguised pass, and Austin made no mis take with a well-placed effort to make it 2-0. Chipping added a third

soon after as 01 Hayhurst was sent clear on goal, and he produced a delightful curling effort off the inside of the far post to seal the game. Charnock Richard

scored an excellent conso lation towards the end with a flashing volley, but the Chipping back four maintained their compo sure to hold onto the points. Danny Walmsley was

named man-of-the-match, and the villagers will look to build on this result at Walmer Bridge on Satur day (kick-off 2-30 p.m.).

Chipping.........................3 Charnock Richard . . . .7 A GOOD all-round team performance saw the vil lagers come out winners against useful opposition. After a goal-less first

half, Chipping finally took the lead on the hour through leading marksman Mark Fordham, who danced through a number of challenges before lifting his effort past the keeper for his 17th goal of the sea son. Shortly after, good inter-

DOG Inn conceded two goals in the dying minutes to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in this title six-pointer at Wilson’s. The Whalley side had

twice come from behind to lead 4-2 at half-time,

' thanks to an Ollie McLean hat-trick - his third of the season - and a Craig Barnes header. They came under pres-

sure in the second half but, even after Welly had reduced the deficit, looked to be holding out for a famous victory. However, after Welly

levelled two minutes from time, the referee inexplica bly added another eight minutes, during which Welly netted their winner. Dog can still mathemat

ically Mn the title, but this defeat means that their fate is no longer in their own hands. Manager Simon Kerins

was hugely disappointed in defeat, but proud of his players’ efforts: “They gave their all and I could n't have asked any more from them. “Some of our play in the

Wolves earn cup final victory

Wolves Under S s ........... 2 Langho Juniors Blue . .1 CLITHEROE Wolves (pictured above, s) emerged deserved winners from a fiercely-contested cup final against a very good Langho side at Old Blackhurnians. Langho started the

stronger of the two sides with the benefit of a strong wind behind them, but though they had much of the play, they never really threatened the Wolves goal. However, three minutes

into the second half, Lang ho took the lead when a magnificent through-ball found striker Adam Bolton and he dispatched his shot under the goalkeeper. Wolves equalised with

an unstoppable shot from Elliot Watson to take the game to extra time, and only a wonder save from James Billington prevent ed the Wolves going behind again. But with three minutes remaining, Watson fired a left foot shot past the impressive Langho keeper to take the trophy.

Langho’Juniors

Langho Under 11s . . . .7 LANGHO earned a cup final place in wet and windy conditions. James Blow scored the

only goal of the game just before half-time after the Huncoat keeper fumbled the ball. Zak Dardouri and Jake

Willacy were outstanding in the second half, and Chris Moore made a reac tion save in the last few minutes to ensure Langho victory. The final will be played

at Rossendale United on Sunday, May 4th.

Meanwhile Langho

Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s all reached their respective cup finals. "rhe Under 8s were

unlucky to lose 2-1 after extra-time to Clitheroe Wolves, Adam Bolton the scorer. The Under 9s put up a

terrific performance against a Knuzden team that remain unbeaten in two seasons but ultimately lost 2-0. And the Under 10s were

victorious against a much bigger Burnley Belvedere team. First half strikes from Michael Greenlees and Charles Knott saw the side win 2-1.

Readstone United

Readslone Under 9s . . .2 Bacup Juniors.............. 2 LEWIS Simpson netted twice as Readstone earned a draw against Bacup Juniors. Owen Grice was named
