STAFF working for Lancashire County Council at Clitheroe’s Tourist Information Centre are to be offered new jobs. A spokesman for the county

council said employees had been told there would be no compulso ry redundancies following the clo sure of the Clitheroe centre this weekend. Instead employees are to be

offered alternative roles within the county’s Library and Infor mation Service until a suitable permanent position can be identi fied. The spokesman said: “Every effort will be made to secure suit able redeployment options for all staff concerned. “The county council’s Library and Information Centres will

continue to respond to informa tion inquiries from local residents and visitors offering both face to face service and free internet access at all libraries. The existing skills and experience of library staff will ensure that residents and visitors to Clitheroe will con tinue to receive an excellent serv ice.” For the past three years the

county council says i t has con sulted and worked closely with Lancashire Locals and Ribble Valley Borough Council to explore alternative sources of funding and the availability of other information outlets follow ing proposals to close the County Information Centre at Clitheroe. The county spokesman added:

Daughter’s fond memories of Dad

A CLITHEROE man who served in the Second World War and supported the Royal British Legion locally has

died. Leonard Garner’s daughter,

Carole Galbraith, has written this tribute to her father. Leonard (pictured) was bom in

Clitheroe in May 1924, the third child in a family of four. He was 12-years-old when his

father died and his mother found him a job before and after school helping the local milkman to deliver milk. When the Second World War

was declared Leonard joined up on July 2nd 1940 and was called up on the 18th. He wasn’t quite old enough but he left his mum with a kiss and a hug and instruc tions to tell the police, if they called, that she couldn’t find his birth certificate. After two weeks training in Blackpool and he was posted to Sussex where he trained as a Ground Gunner for Airfield Defence and served through the Battle of Britain. In early 1941 he volunteered

for overseas service for the forma tion of 260 Squadron. On board the Christian Huygen he was put on small arms gun defence and submarine watch. Leonard and his comrades were attacked by Fokker condors and having taken part in an Atlantic Engagement should have been eligible for the Atlantic Star, but the bureaucrats disagreed. Leonard and several of his comrades felt offended and did

not apply for any of their medals in protest at the bureaucrats deci sion. He applied for, and received, his medals last year but no Atlantic Star. In the Middle East he was

posted to Syria for the end of the Syria Campaign and then took p a r t in th e desert war up to Elaghela eventually back to El Alamein, coming out of the desert in 1943. In 1944 he was posted back to England arriving a few days prior to D Day and he was demobbed in March 1950. On a visit home Leonard went

to the local dance and said he fell in love with the best looking girl there - he married Phyllis in July 1947. They had three children, Leonard, Carole and Norman and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1997. In his spare time he became

secretary of the Royal British Legion, Clitheroe, and played his

.f'.f . , - , *

part in ensuring ex-servicemen who experienced difficulties dur ing civilian life were able to access the many support services pro vided by the Legion. During the 1960s he took up

fishing and bought a caravan near the sea in Cumbria where for more than 20 years he spent most of his weekends with Phyllis and the family. In 1983 he had a heart attack

and took early retirement from the Ribble Cement Works and embarked on an adventure, tour ing America and Canada. Back in Clitheroe he became an allotment holder and kept hens and grew vegetables. The biggest sadness of his life

was when his youngest son, Nor man, died five years ago - he was steward a t th e Royal British Legion. And one of his proudest moments was when he and Phyl lis were invited by the Queen to her Garden Party in the summer of 2003. His mobility deteriorated over

the las t few years but he still found enough energy to sit on a bar stool and enjoy a pint chat ting to friends. He regularly used his free bus pass to meet friends in The Victoria Hotel and the Bridge Inn - his last outing being eight days before he died. Leonard was a man who met

the challenges of life head on and enjoyed his life to the end. His funeral takes place on

Monday a t St Paul’s Church, Low Moor, at 12-30 p.m. followed by burial in Clitheroe.

Tourism staff to be offered new jobs

“Alternative information outlets have been identified through the network of information providers that exist in Clitheroe including the Tourist Information Centre, local library and Clitheroe Inter change. In addition, information will be available through the County Council Customer Ser vice Centre.” When the Market Place TIC

office closes on Saturday, the Clitheroe Tourist Information Centre will move to a temporary home in the Ribble Valley Bor ough Council Offices. From Mon day this new service will continue to open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Bank Holiday Mondays.

Mayor-making ceremony date is set

CLITHEROE’S civic regalia will get an airing on May 6th when the town council holds its annual meeting and mayor-making ceremony. Members of the town council will
