Urgent Care is just that. Not a serious or life- threatening illness or something less urgent that can be treated by your GP but something that just can’t wait and needs urgent attention.

The Urgent Care Centre at Burnley General Hospital can deal with an estimated 8 out of 10 cases, with only those people requiring an ambulance needing to attend East Lancashire’s Emergency Department.

Most injuries and illnesses are not dealt with by the 999 service. You can contact your local GP or attend the Urgent Care Centre at Burnley General Hospital or the Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington Victoria Hospital,

“SHOCKED, but delighted” is how 21-year-old Kate Wool- ley described being named as this newspaper’s work experi ence student of the year for

2007. Cuurrently at Bristol Universi

ty, Kate is the fourth young per son to win a competition held in memory of the late Advertiser and Times reporter Tim Procter. A popular and respected mem

ber of the news team in Clitheroe, Tim inspired hundreds of bud ding young journalists who he came across during the time he worked in the newspaper indus try as a reporter and photogra pher. Tim was well-known for the ethusiastic way he passed on his passion for reporting to others. When Kate returned to our

office she was presented with the Tim Procter Memorial Shield by Tim’s sons, Ian and James. Last September Kate spent a

week working with reporters at the office in King Street. As with all young people who undertake work experience in the Clitheroe newsroom, she was asked to research and write an article on a topic of her choice.

Conductor hangs up his baton

byAimeeWood

CLITHEROE Town Band’s long-serving conductor enjoyed a first-class send-off at his retirement concert. After 10 years’ service conductor Bill Carter has hung up his

baton. But he definitely had a grand finale. Band members held a special concert at Trinity Methodist

Church in Wesleyan Row to say a big thank-you to Mr Carter for his hard work and commitment.

He has been involved in the life of the band since day one. Mr Carter attended the very first meeting to discuss the forma

tion of the band and was asked to become its first conductor. Since then he has led the group at many engagements through

out the Ribble Valley and helped improve the standard and reputa tion of the band during that time. As a former

Army bandsman, and more recently head of instrumen tal studies at Stonyhurst Col lege, Mr Carter’s experience has been invaluable. Along with a ’

large and enthusi astic audience, he thoroughly enjoyed his retirement con cert. The music,

which had been selected by Mr Carter, was per formed by the Kib ble Valley Choir and the town band, which he conducted for the last time. The choir, con

ducted by Stueart Kellington, sang “The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Nabucco, Vivalidi’s “Gloria” and the hymn “The Old Hun dredth”. The audience

joined in through out the night, clap ping their hands and tapping their feet. During the

evening Mr Carter, who lives ' in Garstang, happily reminisced about his years with the band. He told of the

early days of his career when the Mayor of Clitheroe asked for a band to be formed and he decided to become involved. He was present

ed with a plaque, engraved with the opening bars of the Clitheroe March, his wife

J ^ ^ iv e d a bouquet 01 flowers. Mr Carter will

not be giving up his music-making com- pletely as he intends to continue playing trombone with both the town band and the Slaid- bum Silver Band.

LEST (OPPOSITE WOOLWORTHS) • The band now has the difficult job of seeking a

successor to Mr Carter. In the interim period it will be under the baton of

Mr Michael Haydock and Mr John Cowking. Anyone who may wish to be considered for the post should contact Mr Cowking on 01200 423855.
