alogue auction sale on Thursday want ed the pot for the naivety of the decora tion, even though it was in poor condi tion. It emerged that the very early date of

the piece and its rarity meant that at least four major dealers were interested and bidding went through the roof. The pot (pictured) was eventually bought by a West Country specialist. The oval trough is blue earthenware,

handpainted with Chinese scenes, over glazed, with bun feet and lion mask han dles - the feet are not equal in size caus ing it to lean. Silverwoods Auctioneer Wilf Mould

said: “It became clear during viewing that this piece was rather more valuable than we had originally thought - but this price for a pot in its condition really shows that there can be money in your attic when you least expect it.” The market for Chinese, Indian and Islamic ceramics is particularly strong.

Man cleared of bid to kill his ex-wife

A MAN has been cleared of trying to murder his estranged wife in a knife at tack a t her

Ribble Valley caravan home. Allan Murgatroyd (61) was also

found not guilty of an alternative charge of wounding Mth intent to do grievous bodily harm, but the jury at Preston Crown Court did find him guilty of a lesser offence of unlawful wounding. He will be sentenced for that offence on May I6th. During his three-day trial, the

Crown had claimed that Murga troyd lay in wait for his wife, Linda (44), at her caravan home on the Todber site near Gisbum. He was alleged to have repeat

edly stabbed out at her, resulting in injuries to her stomach, mouth, hands and knee, having told her: “I’m going to prison. I'm going to kill you”. It was also claimed that he later

told an arresting officer: “I was going to kill her, I really was and I meant to do it.” Murgatroyd, of St Clements

Court, Barrowford, was further remanded in custody following the verdicts. His barrister, Mr Mark Stuart,

told the court: “He knows it will be an immediate custodial sen tence. The only question is whether a pre-sentence report is needed.” • The judge, Mr Justice Irwin,

said he preferred to have such a report, adding: “It is inevitably a significant custodial sentence”. During the trial the court heard

that Murgatroyd and his \vife had been married for more than a

decade before their marriage broke down last year. She ended up stay ing on at the Todber caravan park, where she worked in the bar, while he moved to Barrowford. Miss Hilary Manley (prosecut

ing) alleged that Mrs Murgatroyd had just returned home to her car avan in the early hours of Novem ber nth last year when the defendant grabbed her and held a knife to her throat. It was claimed that during the tussle which followed he stabbed at her, accusing her of infidelity, and that she also suffered cuts to her hands while trying to grab the blade. M u r g a -

station, saying he thought he had tried to kill his wife and wanted to give himself up. In his evidence to the court,

Murgatroyd, who had no previous convictions or cautions, insisted he had not deliberately tried to stab his wife or intended to hurt her. He said he had gone round to talk because he was upset about

access arrangements to their daughter. He had tried to get in touch and finally went round to the caravan at around 1-45 a.m. that Sunday morning to try and speak to his wife. She was not home and he fell

asleep. He said he picked up a knife, thinking she would talk to him then. “I thought I’d threaten her with

this knife and she’d take notice,” he told the court. He denied ever holding the knife

to her neck, or saying that he was going to prison and that he was going to kill her. Murgatroyd said they had

ended up on the floor, but he had not deliberately tried to stab her in the stomach. His barrister, Mr Mark Stuart,

asked him: “Did you at any stage deliberately try to stab her?” “No” was Murgatroyd’s reply. His counsel then asked him:

“When on the floor, were you try ing in any way to hurt her?” The defendant responded: “No,

I wasn’t trying to hurt her.” He added that his vvife said she

needed a cigarette, so he got up to get her one. “She came running at me,” he

said. “She came and ran at the side of the door. I turned to get hold of her. When she opened the door we both seemed to fall out.” He denied having slashed at her

mouth with the knife, but did not remember how her stomach injury arose. He also could not remember how the hand injuries were caused, but told the court he felt “terrible” about what happened.

Jungle survival SINGLE PRICE IN THE STORE! tests for soldier

W E 'R E C L O S I IWC ON FRI 25th APRIL A t 5.30pm TO MARK DOWN EVERY

A CLITHEROE soldier is spending five weeks in the jungles of Central America, learning how to survive and fight in a hot, humid and unforgiving environment. Kingsman Paul Briggs (27), pictured,

is one of 600 men of the 2nd Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (2 LANCS), among a larger 800-strong bat tle group deployed on Exercise Tropical Storm in Belize. The remaining 200 soldiers include

men and women from attached units of artillery, engineers, logistics and medical. A former pupil of Ribblesdale High

School Technology College, Clitheroe, Kingsman Briggs has served in the Army for nine months and is the son of Stuart and Susan Briggs. He also has a younger brother, Mark. “I have been told to expect to get bit

ten a lot by the mosquitoes and that I will probably lose a lot of weight in the jungle,” said Kingsman Briggs, who is trained as a rifleman. “Joining the Army was something I

had always wanted to do. After high school, I was doing painting and decorat ing and after that, a couple of other jobs. I was looking for something different. Two of my mates had joined the Army and I decided to give it a go as well. It was an attraction that I could come to somewhere like Belize and I am looking forward to going to Cyprus.” The jungle warfare specialists have

taught classes ranging from finding food, sourcing water and making fires, to evac uating casualties after being ambushed by enemy forces. The soldiers will also be trying to avoid

the dangerous wild inhabitants of the Yalbac jungle, such as coral snakes, scor pions, crocodiles, pumas and tarantulas, as well as the noisy howler monkeys keep ing the soldiers awake at night with their loud and distinctive “howls”. The five-week jungle programme will

culminate in a final week-long exercise, with Belize Army soldiers playing the enemy. The training is preparation for a sum

mer deployment to Cyprus, from where the group could be involved in opera tions, most likely in Afghanistan. The soldiers will then return to the

comparative luxury of the permanent UK training camp in Belize at Price Bar racks. They will enjoy rest and relaxation and the chance to take part in adventure training courses or visit nearby tourist such as Cancun. (s)
