Brig can expect no favours!

By Adrian Capstick

FRIENDSHIPS and favours will be forgotten when Clitheroe entertain play-off.chasers Bamber Bridge in Saturday’s final game of the season. Blues boss Neil

Reynolds is best mates with Brig manager Phil Entwistle off the pitch, and has struck up a good relationship with Shaw- bridge predecessor Chris Stammers who now coach es the side. But for 90 minutes, no

matter how desperate Bamber Bridge are for the points, he won’t be giving anything away. He said: “I t ’s looking

like they’ve got to beat us to seal a place in the play offs, but I’m not in the mood to do any favours. “We want to finish on a

high, build on the last 18 or 19 games. “Phil Entwistle is a very

good friend of mine, but we’re fighting to stay in 12th place and attain as many points as possible. “Chris Stammers will be

back, and I’m sure he will be quite lively on their bench.

Fitting opening to new season

IN a fitting opening to the tennis season, Clitheroe’s A and B teams met on their newly-resurfaced courts at a windy Chat- burn Road on Saturday. In the first rubbers,

Derek Parrott and Phil Mileham took on newcom er Bill Smith and Steve Higson, and initially strug gled to slip into gear as their opponents started brightly. The wind made serving

difficult for all the players, but eventually the A team began to click and took the match 6-3,6-3.

In the return matches,

Steve Pym and Tony Bush took on Andy Rose and Peter Bell, and they too found their unfancied opponents difficult to breakdown. However, Steve and

Tony play well as a unit, and proved too strong, fin ishing 6-3, 6-0 at exactly the same time as the other match.

Derek and Phil again started slowly against Andy and Peter and trailed 2-0, before using their heavier ground shots to good effect and closed out 6-3,6-2. One moment of inspired

comedy came from Peter, who tried an extravagant retrieval shot between his legs, but merely succeeded

in giving himself an injury. The final match was

more one-sided, with Steve and Tony proving too con sistent for Bill and Steve, who had played their best tennis in their first match, and finished the game 6-1, 6-0 to give the A team a much-needed 4-0 result in their quest to gain promo tion. The following day.

“He’s done me a few

favours over the last few weeks, and we’ll be friends at 2-55 p.m. and again at 4- 50 p.m., but in the dug out there won’t be any favours.” Craig Sargeson is

unavailable, but co-man- ager Pete Smith will come into the squad for perhaps the very last time. “We’ll have Pete avail

able for what may well be his first-team swansong, as he pulls on his boots one more time. “He’s still as fit as anyone and can still bring a lot to the team.” Meanwhile, chairman

Carl Garner has announced this week that the club will be re-instat ing a reserve team at Shawbridge next season. Managed by former boss

Lee Boyer, the team will play in the Lancashire League alongside the likes of’Accrington Stanley and Morecambe. Garner said: “We’ve

made a formal application to the Lancashire League, and we’re cracking on with that, with the emphasis being on recruiting promis ing young players, with a view to becoming potential first team players of the ■future by giving young

players of East Lancashire every opportunity to join the club. “The UniBond league

has gone to five substitutes next season, of which you can choose three, to fall in line with other leagues. “It increases the oppor

tunity to feed youngsters into the first team set up. “Lee will manage the

team, and it Mil be run as close to the first team as possible with Neil and Pete. “Lee has already identi

fied players he wants in the team, but I’m sure there will be opportunities before next season to join.” Reynolds added: “Every

club has a reserve team, and we’ve lost players due to the unavailability of games, and we don’t want to be lending out players to every club, particularly lads coming back from injury. “I t ’s a big plus as Lee

knows the club, and his track record speaks for itself, both with the team and getting involved with the social side of the club.” Clitheroe wrap up the

season with their annual presentation evening on Saturday night.

This year, Clitheroe are

combining the awards shindig with a race night, starting at 6-30 p.m. in the club house, and Garner wants to see out the season in style: “I would like as many people as possible to come along and celebrate the end of the season. “The full squad will be

there, so come and enjoy the free admission and free supper, and let’s celebrate the end of another long campaign. “All the races are spon

sored, but there is nothing stopping you having a bet if you feel like it.” Curzon Ashlon.............2 Clilheroe........................2 SECOND-half substitute Danny Toronczak earned Clitheroe a point at the expense of another title chasing side. Fellow striker Anthony

Johnson hauled the Blues level in the first half, soon after the home side had taken the lead through Chris Worsley. But a contentious sec

ond strike, that saw the flag stay down when Rho- dri Giggs released top

Count blunts the Chainsaw!

CLITHEROE cage fighter Michael Bisping success fully dropped a weight category to beat "Chainsaw" Charles McCarthy at UFC 83 in Montreal, Canada on Saturday. The former light-heav}rweight made his mixed mar

tial arts middleweight debut (185 pounds) and won by technical knockout at the end of the first five-minute round. McCarthy talked a good game, but his strategy of

covering up when "The Count" attacked proved a mis erable failure. Bisping (16-1, 5-1 UFC) dominated the stand-up

over the first two minutes, but then got slammed by McCarthy, who worked an armbar and came close to success before “The Count” escaped with just over a minute of the round left. And from there on in, McCarthy backed up against

the cage, covered up and let Bisping get off 23 unan swered knees and punches, the last sending him to the canvas where Bisping rained in another 14 punches. The round ended, but McCarthy couldn't get off

the ground and to the joy of the crowd Bisping said: "This is my natural weight. I’m excited to see what I can do. I've established myself. I want to fight the best guys out there."

despite the cold weather, members turned out in force to witness the official opening of the club’s three resurfaced tennis courts. Champagne

and / '

canapes were the order of the day as John Schofield, founder of the indoor ten nis centre in Clitheroe, was invited to cut the ribbon before members braved the elements to play a light hearted American tourna ment. The courts are. used

pany SITA UK. Club Chairman Steve

Higson appealed for more people in the local commu nity to consider becoming members at the club, which is located Mthin the Clitheroe Cricket Club site on Chatburn Road. He said: “The comple

tion of the new courts, together with a new club house which was built last year, has meant that we now have facilities to rival any club in the local area. Adult membership is just £80 a year, while junior membership is as little as £10 which represents fan tastic value.” Anyone interested in

Scuderi ®| stars in derby victory

RIBBLESDALE IVander- ers started the season with a fine 72-run win on the opening day of the season at when they entertained Read.

tain and paid man Jon | Harvey and being asked to bat first.

The former Burnley man was chief wicket-

taker for his side Mth 5-57, but it wasn’t good enough for victory. Put in to bat, Ribbles-

dale quickly established themselves at the crease as fellow opener Alistair Marsh grabbed 17 runs alongside Scuderi. Both eventually were

removed by Harvey, caught behind by Baron, as was Martin Briggs for 21, but further runs from Martin Peel (24), Ryan Gladwin (19) and Stephen Kerr (18) saw Ribblesdale to a competitive 174-6. In reply. Read openers

Nick Marsh (6) and Michael Whalley (3) were quickly dispatched by new addition Richard Meade and David Howard. The Ribblesdale pair

successfully led tbe attack, as Harvey was next to go for just eight runs, destroy ing any realistic chance Read had of mounting a challenge. The paid man was

rather harshly adjudged to have been caught behind by Russell Bradley to a Meade delivery that came oft his arm rather than his glove. Peter Haworth (35) and

Andrew Rushton (25) managed to haul the side towards the century mark, but the dismissals of Jack Jones (9), Warren East- ham (8) and Sam Marsh (4) for single figures saw the side fall well short on 102-7.
