Clitheroe’s poor start as sub-pro shines
CLITHEROE suffered a poor start to the Ribbles- (^|i|keague season with a t^SSKicket defeat at Padi- ham on Saturday. Adnan Raza was the
man-of-the-match as the Arbories substitute profes sional claimed 5-61, before piling on 109 not out of Padiham’s 184-6 reply Standing in tor his
cousin, Padiham paid man Kashit Siddique, Raza smashed 11 fours and six sixes in his time at the crease.
Clitheroe posted 183-9, with further wickets taken by Kevin Hitchon with 3-
41. Chatburn Road profes
sional Paul Turner made a limited impression on the game with just 12 runs before he was run out by Steve Meehan. But new addition Nick
James and Peter Dibb made sizable contributions to the score with 46 and 50 runs respectively Wicketkeeper James, a of
member the
Leeds/Bradford University Centre of Cricketing Excellence squad, eventu ally went leg before wicket to Raza. And Dibb went by the
same hand, caught by Michael Hawke. Captain Neil Bolton (5)
and Jack Dewhurst (3) had fleeting moments dur ing this time, and Dan Glover added 29 before he too went to Raza. The best of the rest was
10 runs from Andrew Pearce and 8 not out from
Michael Houldsworth. In reply Kevin Hitchon
(13) and Philip Metcalfe (17) fell to Michael Houlsworth and Mark Hargreaves respectively But Raza was immov
able, so much so that bar Anthony Hall’s 21, before Pearce bowled him out for one of his 2-52, Padiham didn’t have to call on their remaining three batsmen. Peter Usher (8 not out)
saw out the innings with the sub-professional to fin ish on 184-6. This weekend’s double

Whalley victorious in one-sided battle
IT was a one-sided War of the Roses match at Settle on Saturday when Whal ley hammered the home side. After winning the toss,
the Yorkshiremen would have hoped to have kept Whalley to the 140 mark on a decent track. But a great all-round
performance from substi tute professional Asher Zaidi, with 86 and 6-45, ably supported by Neil Cordingley with a classy 76 not out, saw Whalley get off on the right foot with an impressive 113-run w'in. Martin Davies (5) and
Declan Fitzhenry (33), who showed maturity way beyond his years, opened solidly on a tough track against an opening pair of Paul Ridgeway and David Morrell, who will cause numerous sides problems this year. The former Station
Road skipper was first to fall to Morrell, before the youngster was caught and bowled by home pro Bret Silvey This brought together
Zaidi and Cordingley who both applied themselves in the correct manner, wait ing for the bad ball, and after 20 overs, 49-2 looked a good start. The pair picked up the
singles and treated the sparse crowd to some
sparkling shots. Zaidi was first to his 50
off 73 balls, with his first 20 balls only yielding five of them! He stepped up the pace
before falling for a cultured 86, with the third wicket partnership having amassed 134, his knock containing six fours and three maximums. Cordingley made sure
the final total was formi dable, with a late onslaught that saw him hit three maximums in the final over to end undefeat ed on 76, with three fours and five sixes, his 50 com ing off just 69 deliveries. The last five overs saw
the addition of 65 runs and Whalley closed on 215-3. The Settle reply was hit
as early as the second ball when Fitzhenry snapped up former Colne man Jeff Ellis off Cordingley, and it wasn't long before the slow left arm of Zaidi had the IVhite Rose men on the ropes at 39-5, with their last two hopes Ridgeway and Verden at the crease. Settle were sedate to the
end, and when Ridgeway w'ent with 80 on the board, it seemed just a matter of time before the visitors wrapped up all the points, only for \Wthington to survive two Ibw appeals in the final over to deny Whalley a maximum start. Zaidi finished with 6-45
off 22 overs as Whalley put in a good display in the field despite the arctic cli mate, with a catch of par ticular note being taken by Matt Hansen - running in from the deep and taking the ball round his ankles. Whalley will look to
continue the promise shown when the first dou ble header sees Great Har wood visit Station Road on Saturday, before mak ing the short trip to Padi ham on Sunday And if all things go to
plan, paid man Rajagopal Satish should be available, fresh from captaining India to wetorj’ in the I CL
Twenty/20 competition. Clilheroe
