resu lt against the league leaders, it will keep us very much in the title race. “As for the cup game,

if we can overcome Globe we will be jiist one win away from the final a t Accrington Stanley. “There can be no greater incentives."

Late goal hits Blues

Brigg Town ............... 1 Clilheroe............... .... .0 BRIGG broke a three-sea son deadlock against the Blue wth a last-gasp win ner. Every time these two

teams have met since the Blues gained promotion to the UniBond League in 2004, the game has finished either goalless or 1-1, and this fixture was shaping up for more of the same. Brigg had absolutely no

fire power for the majority of the game, and Danny Woodhead was hardly troubled in the Ciitheroe goal all afternoon as shots flew over, wide or straight at him. In fact the Blues had

looked the closest to scor ing with the few fleeting attempts they mustered. The visitors were quick

on the a tta ck from the whistle, and loan signing Lennie Reid from Fleet- wood proved a handful on the right wing. Unfortunately,

the

returning former Blue, who played two games under Paul Byron at Shawbridge two seasons ago, was Clitheroe’s only goal threat as striker Chris Ward was absentthrough illness. Reid turned the Brigg

defence inside out, and it soon became clear why he is a fans’ favourite at the seaside club. He hadn’t been getting

regular football a t the UniBond Premier club, but he was sharp enough to strike the Brigg wood work from 20 yards in the second half. His GOth minute effort

saw him run at right back Tommy Spall, before jink ing inside and unleashing a

dipping shot that beat the keeper, but not the bar. The speedy winger was

not the only new player on the scene, though, but for mer Blackburn Rovers and Accrington Stanley midfielder Joel Byrom didn’t make as big an impression. He was unfortunate to

receive a yellow card early in the first half for an innocuous challenge, which meant his involve ment was limited for the rest of the game as he got to grips with the rudi ments of non-league foot ball for the first time. In fact, before Reid’s

effort, Ciitheroe were limit ed to a John Kennedy header over the bar and another by Gregg Anderson that flew wide of the mark. And afterwards. Will

Exton connected with a low Owen Roberts cross from the byeline, sliding his way through the six- yard box only to poke wide. That was about it.

Brigg had the odd foray on the break, that ended in the ball sailing over the bar, but (his game had a point apiece written all over it - until the final two minutes that is. Direct from a goal kick,

the ball was allowed to bounce on the edge of the Blues’ box, and Brigg sub- situte Karl Slack was first to it, in behind makeshift right-back Jason Jones, firing past Woodhead first time off the bar. Ciitheroe: Woodhead,

Jones, Roberts, Garner, Anderson, Fisher, Reid, McKenna (Sargeson), Byrom, Exton (Smith), Kennedy.

THE 2007 captains and president officially took office at Ciitheroe Golf Club at the weekend. The annual driving in ceremony

took place at the Ciitheroe club with the new officials launching the new season. Pictured from the left are lady

B The latest in professional Jamie Hunt’s series of winter competitions was held at Whalley Golf Club on Saturday. Played over 13 holes, there was a

three-way tie on 46 nett. After scrutiny of the cards, Derek

Shirtcliffe took first place, with George Blenkinship second and Jerry Riley in third place. Shirtcliffe’s win moves him to sec

ond place in the Order of Merit, only one point behind leader Trevor Thornber, with Roy Ellis in third place.

ronte crabs four!

ciitheroe....................... 6 Lancaster...................... 0 BRONTE Box Morton hit four as a second half blitzz cemented Ciitheroe Hockey Club’s position as league leaders. After a tricky opening

. period, five second half goals put the game beyond doubt. But they were dealt a

blow before play had even begun, with two defenders suffering serious knee dam age in the warm-up. After a quick tactical

change, the game got under way and Ciitheroe tried to make an immediate impact on the Lancaster defence. The locals battled hard,

and after only six minutes, good link-up play from mid- field to attack was reward

ed when Bronte Box Mor ton fired home at the back post. Ciitheroe continued to

exert pressure on their opponents, searching for the ail-important second goal. But excellent defending

and clinical goalkeeping was enough for the visitors to hold on until the inter val. After

the break,

Ciitheroe continued to be frustrated until a moment of class from the prolific Rachel Walmsley. She picked the ball up

outside the area, weaved past a couple of defenders and slipped the ball past the keeper to double her side’s lead. , Ciitheroe were now start ing to put everything

[Iurst Green................. 5 adopted a more direct style Langho......................... 3 of play, and equalised when HURST Green stretched leading scorer Mark Young their lead at the top of the East Lancashire League to seven points by beating one of their nearest rivals. Despite the scoreline, this

finished well after being put through by the impressive Ian Simpson. The table-toppers went

was not a great game as the strong wind made life diffi cult for both teams! Third-in-the-table Lang

ho started much the better of the two sides, despite playing against the wind and up the Hurst Green slope. They were well on top for

the first 20 minutes and took the lead with a good headed goal from Phil Sharpies. The home side then

s i

on to dominate the remain der of the first half. Alan Coar fired them

into the lead, and was involved in two great moves that forced good saves from the Langho keeper. In the end Hurst Green

were disappointed to reach the break only one goal to the good. But they burst into life in

the second half and raced into a 5-1 lead. Young looked suspicious ly off-side when conjuring

up a superb finish to make it 3-1. And then Coar raced

through to make it 4-1, before rattling the crossbar with a fine effort following a good run at goal. Tony Coupe scored his

first goal of the season when converting

Craig

Dewhurst’s corner with a stinging volley. At 5-1, the game looked

done and dusted, although the scoreline was harsh on the visitors. But Langho had other

ideas and kept Hurst Green penned back in their own halt tor the remaining 25 minutes. . They reduced the arrears when James Robertson

turned and shot from inside the box. And it was 5-3 when’

Shaun Berry made the most of hesitation in the Hurst Green defence. Langho continued to

dominate, but Hurst Green held firm to stretch their lead at the top of the table. Manager Andy Holden

was not over impressed with the performance, but delighted with the result which keeps his side on track to regain the title. , Both teams are in action

in the President’s Cup on Saturday. Hurst Green entertain Read United while Langho are at home to Bacup .CC. Both games kick-off at 1-45 p.m.

SWIMMING starlet Tom Carter has struck gold in his beloved sport.

Tom strikes gold! /

The 12-year-old took top spot in his category at the

recent Bolton and Manchester District Championships. Held at the Manchester Aquatics CenVe, Tom took

gold in the 50 metre backstroke event. But he wasn’t finished there, as he also took a bronze

medal in the 100 metre backstroke. Hailing from Ciitheroe, Tom attends Ribblesdale

High School and swims for the Pioneers 79 club. Our picture shows him sporting his two medals along side coach Lee Stringfellow (s).

together and play some good team hockey, but more solid defending from Lan caster and a couple of lucky escapes made sure Clitheroe’s tally was restricted. However, Ciitheroe did

eventually open the Lan caster defence again, with Box Morton the final player to touch the ball and score the third. The hosts were now in

cruise control, and played some breathtaking hockey. In the final 10 minutes.

Box Morton completed a well deserved hat-trick, fol lowed instantly with her fourth of the day a minute later to make the score 5-0. The game had minutes

remaining, and Lancaster were fighting to keep the ball out of their o™ area. This was to the advan

tage of the Ciitheroe team, who played an excellent passing move and found Walmsley, who made no mistake.
