Where the smart money should go - the version that’s not Jazz-ed up

RACTISE certainly makes perfect as far as H;pndai is concerned, par ticularly with respect to the design
of its popular Coupe. We have seen numerous versions of this
sporty little number over the years, each one honing the shape and refining the detailing of its predecessor. The latest ver sion certainly should be the best yet. The first-generation Hyundai Coupe was
a very good car, but it was still bought pri marily on price. All that changed with the introduction of the second-generation model in 2003. Here, at last, was a car that could be bought on its merits alone. As a result, it sold well in the UK. It is the SIH version of this model that we are looking at here and this is its second facelift. Upon acquaintance with this latest
Coupe, you are at first drawn to its swoopy Latin styling and its solidly Teutonic inte rior, noting that Hyunadi has managed to hit the nail firmly on the head in these departments. There is a restyled front end to consider
mth longer, meaner headlamps, a thin “ let terbox” grille and a wide air-intake below that hides revised fog lights in its corners. The trademark side gills now also have integrated side repeater lights. Inside, build quality is surprisingly good and there is a retro feel to the decor. Three petrol engines are on offer, open ing up with the 1.6-litre. This 16v DOHC
aggressively and then ensures that all the latest changes to the Jazz range are devoted solely to the 1.4-litre model. Despite not fea turing the very latest styling tweaks, the smaller engined version still emerges as the pick of the range. The 1.2-litre engine gives virtually noth

ing away in most objective measures to the 1.4-litre power plant. Whereas the existing 1.4-litre unit is good for 83 b.h.p., the 1.2- litre is only five horsepower shy at 78 b.h.p. Top speed is identical and it is only a mite slower to 60 m.p.h. Fuel consumption goes up from 48.7
m.p.g. to 51.4 m.p.g., which makes the 1.2- litre version one of the more economical petrol-powered superminis. Despite this, it is still rather surprising
that Honda has never developed a competi tive compact diesel engine that could slot beneath the Jazz’s stubby bonnet. Whereas the 1.4-litre car is treated to a

refresh of its styling, the 1.2-litre model is only available in base S specification and continues with the old car’s lights, wheels and door mirrors. Although this may seem a distinctly half hearted way of introducing a “new” model, it is merely a reality of the car industry that existing stock has to shift and it is best to do it as cheaply as possible. So it is that the 1.2- litre car does without 15in. alloy wheels, door-mirror mounted LED indicators and the revised front and rear light clusters. With a price saving of £1,800 over the 1.4- litre SE, the 1.2s driver may well be pre pared to forego such fripperies in favour of the cold hard cash.

in-line four-cylinder power plant does not disgrace itself either.
The Coupe 1.6 will hit 60 m.p.h. in 11.4
seconds and run on to a top speed of 115 m.p.h. Being able to return an average of over 37 m.p.g. is also much to its credit. The 2.0-litre model offers more power and is a much nicer package all round. The engine’s quite sweet and reasonably torquey, all factors that encourage you to make the most of the car’s agile handling. The sprint is accomplished in 9.3 seconds
and has a top speed of 129 m.p.h. using the manual gearbox. Top of the range is the 2.7-litre V6 DOHC 24-valve version, devel oping 165 b.h.p. and capable of a top speed nearing 140 m.p.h. In order to enable driv ers to make the most of the V6 perform ance, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic transmission is also available. The equipment levels are surprisingly
good. For example, the entry-level 1.6-litre model comes with floating calliper brakes
including ABS and electronic brake-force distribution. So what is it like to drive? Even the 1.6-
htre Coupe will come as something of a surprise. The featherweight 1.6-litre engine ^ves the Coupe a nimbleness and delicacy that the flagship variant lacks.

Indeed, at £8,850, the Jazz is now priced
so aggressively that many rivals are left looking rather silly. The Jazz has succeeded so well because it
manages the essential compromises of the supermini market better than most. Manufacturers strive to build a car that is
small on the outside yet spacious indoors, that is quick off the mark yet able to return impressive fuel economy. It is also about being able to create a styl
ish shape given all of the previous con straints. Some cars manage it far better than others, and the Jazz is prima facie evi- ilence.
As much as we like the 1.4-litre Jazz,
there is no getting away from the fact that the 1.2-litre S model - even without the lat est nips and tucks - makes a far more con vincing value proposition. If you are going to buy a supermini, it is
pointless lavishing money on a top-of-the- range version, as you will not recoup any thing like that sum when the time comes to sell. The 1.2-litre S encapsulates all of the Jazz’s inherent quality; as well as its endear ing personality and driving dynamics, in a value pack that takes some beating.
