CMBS? Chances are you've no idea what it all means, according to new research carried out by online car buyer's guide NEW CAR NET. As they strive to keep up with advances
in new motoring technology, car manu facturers continuously come up with a dizzying array of acronyms for their newest gadgets and gizmos. But NCN's
•thousands of users were largely baffled when they were asked to RSVP to a quick online quiz. Only a third of motorists canvassed
knew, for instance, that PCS stands for Pre-Collision System, with half believing it refers to a completely fictional Proac tive Cornering Stability. Most people knew one of the easier

answers, with 97% guessing correctly that PAS means Power Assisted Steering. But opinion was split right down the mid dle as to whether FWD stands for Front or Four Wheel Drive, the former being the right answer. "Buying a car is a stressful process on
its own, without having to try and deci pher all these acronyms," says Massimo Pini, of NEW CAR NET. "Most of us have enough trouble choosing a make, model, colour and price range. All of these confusing initials, which
generally refer to bits of incidental tech nology on the car, might sound impres sive, blit motorists have no idea what they mean. "Ask the salesman what they stand for
and what the part they refer to actually does. You'll often find you don't really need to know about them anyway!"

subishi Shogun, which arrived in May 2000, was a car that
helped set trends. Engines and suspension were bolt
ed directly to the monocoque body rather than installed in a separate chassis, contrary to the way that many family-style 4x4s had devel oped. In fact, it had more in common with car-like luxury 4x4 models, such as BMW’s X5. This “hybrid” between old school
rugged appeal and modem underpin nings proved quite popular, and the fourth-generation car builds on those solid foundations \vith a massive host of detail changes. If you are after the last word in
off-road ability, the Mitsubishi Shogun, despite the 11 Paris-Dakar wins that it can boast, is not it. What the Shogun does offer is a very use- able compromise between on-road refinement and off-road ability that will be more than adequate for most. If you want something that is even
more adept in the deep stuff, you ivill be looking at something like a Land Rover Discovery. Engineers from the Japanese
brand will argue with this of course and, to be fair, the Shogun is a more than competent tool in the rough stuff. It uses an AWC all-wheel con-
trol system, which works in tandem with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4 II transfer case. Using a centre differen tial lock to split available torque 33:67 front to rear, this system offers no fewer than four transmission modes; high-range rear wheel drive, high-range full-time four wheel drive, four-wheel drive with a locked centre differential for slippery conditions and low-range four wheel drive vrith the locked differential for hauling yourseF out of a mud bath. On-road owners will appreciate the
added urge of the 3,200cc common- rail diesel that is now good for 168 b.h.p. in manual form-up6b.h.p.on the old engine. Where this engine really scores is in offering 381Nm of torque at 2,000 r.p.m. . Although the shape looks instantly familiar, there are a number of key differences between this fourth gen eration car and its direct predecessor. Keen spotters will clock the con toured front lights blended with the blistered leading edge of the front wheelarch. There is also a revised
