BIRD watchers in the Rib ble Valley are being urged to ta k e p a r t in a n a t io n a l “avian audit” this weekend. The Royal Society for the

Protection of Birds (RSPB) will hold its “Big Garden Bird- watch” on Saturday and Sun day. The charity is hoping half- a-million people in the UK tvill spend an hour counting the birds in their gardens to help build a detailed picture of gar den bird life. Jane Sellek, regional Big

Garden Birdwatch co-ordina tor, said: “Last year’s summer was the h o ttest since our records began and this was fol lowed by an incredibly warm autumn with lots of natural foods in our woodlands and hedgerows. Until the recent cold snap, this winter has been very mild. “We’re really interested to

see what impact the combina tion of unusual weather condi tions and abundant wild food will have on wintering garden bird numbers.” Some of the birds seen in our

gardens are not year-long resi dents. Robins, blackbirds, song thrushes and starlings all migrate to British gardens from across the continent. Jane added: “Autumn 200G

saw new heat records set across Europe and without colder weather to trigger their migra tion, and with so much natural food available where they are, many of these birds may not have made the journey to the UK so far. This could have a

real impact on what we see dur ing the Birdwatch.” Big Garden Birdwatch has

already shown th a t milder weather in the UK in recent years is encouraging more unusual species, such as the blackcap and chiffehaff, to \vin- ter in our gardens. These birds usually winter in southern Europe or northern Africa. With this winter set to be one of the warmest on record, will the blackcap and chiffehaff rise up the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings? Jane said: “Further changes

to our climate will inevitably mean more unusual species in our gardens, but it could also see the disappearance of many familiar faces. However, you don’t have to be an expert to take p a r t - i t ’s a fun event designed for all the family.” To take part, simply spend

one hour over the weekend of January 27th and 28th count ing the birds in your garden or local park, and record the high est number of each bird species seen at any one time. Big Garden Birdwatch is one

of the first indicators to show how well UK birds have fared during the previous breeding season and winter. With 28 years’ worth of data and half-a- million people expected to par ticipate, the results give an early indication of garden bird trends. Visit the RSPB website (www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch) for more information on how to take part and to submit your results online.

Jessica hands over the prizes

CLITHEROE business Dug- dale Nutrition sponsored this year’s opening (jraven Dairy Auction a t Skipton Auction Mart. Dudgale's ruminant special

ist, Jessica Wallbank, was pres ent to hand over sponsor's prizes at the show. The champi on was a newly-calven heifer giving 40 litres of milk from the Whinhill Holstein Friesian commercial herd of father-and- son dairy farmers Malcolm and Robert Swires, of Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw, Harro gate. The title-winner sold for £1,080 to Jim Caygill, of Ryl- stone, and was one of eight entries that topped four figures. Jeremy Eaton, general manag er a t Skipton Auction Mart, commented: “In terms of qual

ity cattle and levels of trade, it was an extremely promising start to the new Craven Dairy Auction year. “We continue to a t t ra c t

dairy animals from a wide area, including some of the north’s top Holstein pedigree cattle breeders, while there remains strong trade for hard-wearing commercial cattle. The month ly format works well and suits the needs of the modern dairy farmer.” The next Craven Dairy Auction takes place on Monday, February 26th. Robert Swires is pictured, left, with his third Craven Dairy Auction champion, joined by show judge Aubrey Greenhalgh and Jessica Wallbank, of Clitheroe-based sponsors Dug- dale Nutrition, (s)
