little citycar that lavmched this car in Europe back at the turn of the century. Brand owners Daimler Chrysler

unwisely tried to broaden the mar que’s appeal with more expensive models in subsequent years - and paid the financial price. Which is why the future plan for this brand is centred solely around the second

• generation fortwo model we are looking at here. This fortwo may look almost the

same as its predecessor, but, in fact, ' exactly 451 changes have been made. They were needed. After all, though there was a lot about the old smart fortwo’s driving experi ence that was very good, many felt that the overall effect was ruined by an utterly hateful gearbox and steering which felt as if it was attached to the front wheels by bungee cords. The good news is that'both of

these issues have been addressed in the latest fortwo. The six-speed automated manu

al gearbox has been replaced by a Getrag five-speed unit, which still automates the shift with the help of an electric motor but shift times have been halved which means that youwill no longer suffer that lurch, pregnant pause and then gradual take up of power the old car suffered. Otherwise, it looks much the same. The steering has been made 10 %

quicker, the standard rack now just 3.5 turns lock to lock. It is still not what you would call racy, but it is a good deal less flabby feeling than before. Electric power steering is also an option, sharpening feel still further. Engine-wise, the cubic capacity

has leapt frora 0.7 litres to 1.0-litre. Two normally-aspirated power plants are offered, of either 61 or 71 b.h.p. and there is also an 84 b.h.p. turbo model. This litre lump has been developed in conjunction vkdth Mitsubishi and all three versions offer considerably more torque than the equivalent engine in the previous generation fortwo. There

; By ANDY.ENRIGHT

is also a 45 b.h.p. diesel model which will sup around 3.5 litres of fuel per 100km, which is just over 81 m.p.g. in old money. Taken in isolation, this fortwo

does not look too different to its immediate predecessor, but sit the two cars back to back and it is easy to see where the changes have been made. For a start, the smart is no longer quite the pure design of old, having swelled almost 20cm in length and 4.3cm in width. The track and the wheelbase have also been stretched, but the majority of the length has been imposed upon the company by new pedestrian crash legislation. The car’s face looks a little differ

ent, with projector lights and a smiling grille aperture, 'while the side reveals a slimmer aspect to the tridion safety cell in the sill and door area.

One of the cleanest The door handles have also been

rotated around 90 degrees tor ease of use. The rear wings are more contoured and the rear window has more slope to it than before. Four instead of six rear lights are now apparent, the fog light and revers ing lights now slotted beneath the brake lights and indicator compos ite units. ■ Space inside was always very good for two adults (it not their baggage), but the latest car is bet ter still. Somewhat unusually, the passenger seat is mounted 15cm further back than the driver’s seat so that shoulder room can be max imised. Smart claims that passen gers have an additional three cen timetres of elbow room compared to the old car, which never felt small even for taller people. Lug gage room has also usefully increased from 150 to 220 litres. Available in both two-door coupe

form and soft top cabrio, the fort wo is offered in three familiar main stream trim levels - pure, pulse and passion - with sporty-looking BRABUS vei'sions on the way. The entry-level pure model is designed

as econobasic entry-level trans port, with a two-spoke steering wheel, a black grooved plastic roof and steel wheels. If utilitarian chic is not doing it

for you, best to pass the pure by and take a look at the pulse. This is an altogether sportier affair, \vith a black or silver tridion cell, six- spoke alloy wheels with wider tjres and coordinated fabric on the seats, door trims, knee pads and instrument panel. A transparent polycarbonate roof is joined by a rev counter, clock, three-spoke sports steering wheel, shift paddles, electric front windows, front fog lights and an additional storage compartment in the tailgate. The passion model gets silver

painted door mirrors and front grille, 12-spoke alloys, air condi tioning, leather trimmed steering wheel, softouch gear shift plus a luggage compartment cover with a net bag. There are not too many cars that

can beat a fortwo in terms of cost of ownership. The key thing driv ing down the pence-per-mile figure is the residual value of a used example, and this latest model

’ looks set to better its predecessor in terms of used desirability. Then there is the fuel economy.

Granted, fortwos do not tend to soak up big mileages, but they are often used in cities where many conventional cars return lousy fuel consumption figures. The 61 b.h.p. petrol engine will average around GO m.p.g. and the diesel model around 80 m.p.g., but around town expect about 55 m.p.g. from the diesel car. This Will also emit just 90g/km of carbon dioxide, making it one of the cleanest cars on sale. Insurance costs are driven down

by the fortwo’s ease of repair, the elastic plastic body panels being capable of shrugging off typical parking knocks. The white, black or yellow panels are flexible and the colour is deep moulded in, so super ficial scratches are hard to spot. I t also means that a more seri

ously damaged panel can be replaced inexpensively without need for costly and time-consum ing repainting.

shown that the technology was relevant and reliable and now all that needed to happen was for a manufacturer to bring it within reach of the masses. The 206GG went on to become the best

selling convertible car in the UK for three consecutive years, and with more than 360,000 units built it proved the world’s favourite small coupe-cabriolet. That is some billing for the 207GG to live up to. The Peugeot 206 always had a fine array

of engines to draw upon - and the 207 is no exception. Three power plants are offered and, somewhat oddly, they are all 1.6-litre IG-valve units. Two are petrols, the other an economical common-rail diesel. The entry-level petrol engine is a 120

b.h.p. normally-aspirated 1.6-litre. This is the engine that will rack up most sales and it is a variant of the next engine in the line up, the 150 b.h.p. turbo 1.6, albeit shorn of the turbo-charger. Nevertheless, it still looks quite punchy,

delivering its maximum power at 6,000 r.p.m. and its peak torque figure of 1181b/ft at 4,250 r.p.m. One of the notable features of these engines is the flat torque curve, with 88% of maximum torque available from just 2,000rpm. The real standout engine in this range

remains the 150 b.h.p. turbo-charged vari ant. Seen in the MINI Gooper, this power plant is probably the finest petrol unit this side of Audi’s 2.0T. This THP (turbo high pressure) engine features a beefy peak

e f o r e the Peugeot 206GG appeared back in 2001, the folding hard top convertible was strictly the

By ANDY ENRIGHT torque figure of 1771b/ft from only 1,400

r.p.m. The 207GG does npt deviate too much from the template set by the 206GG, but the proportions are a little less stubby, the silhouette a few degrees more elegant. With 2+2 seating (although you would not want to try to lever adults into the back seats), the 207GG is 4.04 metres long, adding 21cm to the length of the 206GG. Like all modern Peugeot models, the

207GG differentiates itself by offering seri ous equipment as standard, bringing big car electronics to this section of the mar ket. The air conditioning system is dual zone,

offering the front passengers the opportu nity to select their individual ambience and it will detect whether the hood is up or down, adapting airflow accordingly. In-car entertainment options are also very impressive, ranging from a relatively straightforward RDS GD system with or without a Bluetooth hands-free kit right up to a very serious JBL hi-fi system. There is even colour satellite navigation available as a factory fit option. Trim lev els are limited to two: Sport and GT. None of the three engines available are

going to cost the earth to run, although the diesel stands out courtesy of its 54.3 m.p.g. combined figure. The petrol engines are not exactly fuel

hogs either, the normally-aspirated 120 b.h.p. unit returning an average of 43.4 m.p.g. (or 39.2 if you mate it to the option al automatic gearbox). Alternatively, the zippy 150 b.h.p. turbo installation manages 39.2 miles per gallon.
