A NEW book detailing the history of Castle Cement’s Ribblesdale works, in Clitheroe, is being re­ searched and the author is appealing for local people to play their part. Peter del Strother, pictured,

sioned by the company, sees him pulling together not only the technical history of the Ribblesdale site, but the human story, unravelling so­ cial history stretching back 250 years. “The processing of industri­


al minerals has taken place on the site since 1750, but while the book will cover this earlier period, it will mostly concen­ trate on the period since 1935, when the current cement works was built,” said Peter. “I ’ve already carried out


some interviews with past and present employees, but I would like to hear from anyone who has any relevant or interesting information or anecdotal sto­ ries to tell about the site. I ’m particularly keen to receive any photographs of people working on the site. “I ’m also eager to find out more about the early history

PROVIDERS of accommoda­ tion in the Ribble Valley are being given a helping hand to show th a t they offer a high- quality service, thanks to a new initiative from Lancashire County Developments Ltd (LCDL), Lancashire County Council’s economic develop­ ment company. A series of workshops for


people who offer guest accom­ modation such as B&Bs, farm­ houses, guest houses or inns - hotels come under a different category - aims to help pro­ prietors gain those precious stars outside their front doors. The Quality Awareness


Workshops are tree and open to all tourism accommodation operators throughout Lan­ cashire who are not already in a national inspected quality scheme. At the workshops, accom­


modation operators will be able to learn how to get a star rating, the “badge” of quality. They will also meet repre­


sentatives of Quality in Tourism, the national tourist accommodation rating organ­ isation, who will be explaining the star scheme and also giv­ ing a practical demonstration of what is required to meet the standards. Information will be avail­


able about the Lancashire grants towards the cost of joining the star scheme, and representatives of the Lan­ cashire and Blackpool Tourist Board will also be at the events so tha t delegates can learn first-hand about how to get extra help with marketing and other business services. In the Ribble Valley, the


workshop will be held at 1-30 p.m., on Wednesday, January 3Ist, at the ’ Calf's Head, Worston, Clitheroe. If you are interested in at­
