tors, thinking I was going to die, but was reassured when he told me this did happen occasionally." Mr Fairley stressed that he

had always tried to control his diabetes and not let it control him. He had tried to lead life to the full and still enjoyed watching Accrington Stanley. He greatly appreci-

The medal was presented

by Dr Bob Wilkinson, con sultant diabetologist with the Blackburn group of hos pitals. He paid tribute to Mr Fairley and his wife. The award, from Diabetes

UK, is named after Alan Nabarro, one of the first peo ple to go on insulin after it was discovered by Banting and Best in 1921 and the first person in Great Britain to complete 50 years as an insulin-dependent diabetic. ® Also when the Ribble

Valley Diabetes Support Group met, quite an entrance was made by Meg, a collie- whippet cross attending her first meeting with her owner, Trudy Barker. Meg, who is being trained

as a support dog. greeted the audience by wagging her tail enthusiastically then settled down under her mistress's wheelchair and slept for the rest of the meeting. Trudy said she would miss

Meg very much when she goes to a training centre for two months, but was looking forward to being reunited with her and to all the help Meg would then be able to give her. In his talk to the group. Dr

Wilkinson explained that the responsibility for diabetic

time and on some weeks, children may be found getting to grips with sewing, bak ing, gymnastics, football, yoga, chess and playing computer games, while on other weeks, they may enjoy a barrel of laughs during a West African drumming session! In the past, the school has worked in

partnership with Clitheroe’s Roefield Leisure Centre giving children the oppor tunity to take part in many sports. When Year 6 pupil Thomas Whyte

asked headteacher Mr Robert Pye what he thought about the session, he replied: “Golden Time gives children, who have worked hard all week, an opportunity to get excited about doing things that are fun and completely different.” Similar views were shared by teaching assistant Tracey Banks, who said: “I
