Ciitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Fears for shop’s future by Faiza Afzaal

FIVE months after opening, a Whalley butcher is facing the prospect of closure because of roadworks

outside his shop. Mr Stuart Tyldesley,

pictured, who has been running S. Tyldesley and Son in Accrington Road since September, claims his takings are down by at least a half since Lan cashire County Council workmen started digging outside his shop two weeks ago. Drainage is being

replaced and gullies are being added as part of a five-week project to pre vent possible flooding to nearby properties. But this is bad news for

Mr Tyldesley, because, as a result of the mainte nance work, temporary traffic lights have been erected outside his shop and he claims potential customers are being put off by the disruption and the inability to park and are taking their custom elsewhere. He said if this contin

ues he could be out of business very soon. “This is a new venture

for me,” added the fed-up butcher, who lives in Pas-

trade and disruption caused, the 29-year-old has blasted county bosses for not giving him plenty of notice about the main tenance work. He added: “Officials at

county council only gave me one day’s notice. “This is not enough. I

although he understands necessary roadworks need to be carried out, he is worried about his busi ness suffering any further and has contacted offi cials in a bid to find a solution to this problem, but to no avail. He concluded by say

this year’s takings with and the county council is just not interested. “I started from no cus

tomers to having 300 and am trying to make this business go from strength from strength. However, the roadworks have not helped and the past cou ple of weeks have been the worst ever!” In reply to all the con

cerns expressed, a spokesman for Lancashire County Council, said: “Drainage is being replaced and gullies are

out on small sections of the road a t a time and will take a total of five weeks to complete. “We understand th a t

local trading has been dis rupted in the short term, but this is essential main tenance work th a t will prevent possible flooding to adjacent properties.” Our picture shows Mr

Adjourned for reports

A DRIVER from Grindle- ton who crashed into the back of a car waiting at traffic lights was later found to be four-and-a-half times the legal drink-drive limit.

Nicholas Lawrence Don

ald Trimby (44), of Bren- nand Terrace, pleaded guilty at Blackburn Mag istrates’ Court to driving with excess alcohol. He was remanded on

bail until March 14th for the preparation of pre-sen tence reports, with a warn ing that custody would be

an option for the sentenc ing bench. The court heard the col

lision happened at 3 p.m. in Simonstone Lane, Simonstone. Trimby was arrested because he smelled of intoxicants and a breath sample at the police station produced a reading of 156 against the legal limit of 35. Inviting the magistrates

to adjourn for pre-sentence reports, Mrs Clare Knight (defending) said Trimby had personal problems at the moment.

MOTORISTS in the Ribble Valley are being warned that honesty is the best policy if caught speeding. The Lancashire Partnership for

Road Safety has issued a caution to drivers who may be tempted to

try and duck out of a speeding fine. This comes after a motorist

caught speeding by a roadside safe ty camera persistently disputed his fine and ended up paying more than £700 after being found guiity.
