POLICE have released a list of Ribble Valley roads to be target ed by mobile patrols over the coming week to enforce speed limits. The sites are published weekly

Family’s lucky escape as tanker overturns
by Faiza Afzaal
A DRIVER and his two children were lucky to escape serious injury when a 38-tonne tanker carrying animal blood overturned on a roundabout on the A59. The accident happened at 2-
15 p.m. last Wednesday at the busy roundabout at the junc tion of the A59 with the A671 Burnley Road and resulted in police sealing off the road for approximately four hours. Driver Mr William Byrom
(33), of Newton, Lancaster, sustained cuts and bruises and his 10-year-old son had cuts and a suspected fracture. Fire crews had to cut free
his seven-year-old daughter, whose arm was trapped in a “crumpled” part of the tanker’s cab. A crash team from Black
burn Royal Infirmary, police and two fire crews, including specially-trained officers from Preston, were involved in the rescue operation, which took over an hour. The air ambulance was sent
to the scene from Blackpool at around 2-30 p.m., but as the casualties were not as serious ly injured as had been feared, it was sent back to its base at 3-40 p.m. The three casualties were
taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary by ambulance. Fire chief for Clitheroe
retained station, Mr Dave McGrath described the rescue

operation as a very “danger ous and delicate” job. He said: “The little girl was
in a crumpled part of the pas senger side and her arm was trapped and was very difficult to relieve. “I praise the girl for her
bravery. Although she was in shock, she remained extreme ly calm throughout the whole incident. “Because it was very dark
inside the cab, we couldn’t determine what was going on and had to be extra careful for the girl’s safety. “After an hour, and after
using numerous equipment, we managed to release her arm
and she was subsequently taken to the hospital with her father and brother.” Mr McGrath has commend
ed the efforts of all the emer gency teams involved. He added: “This was an extreme ly serions accident and could have resulted in serious conse quences. “Dealing with the crash was
a complete team effort and because of this, thankfully, we got the result we were looking for.” It is understood that the
DAF tanker had been filled with blood from a nearby abattoir before it toppled over. Luckily, it did not spill on to
Roger is recording CD to help restore church organ
AN organist is releasing a CD to raise funds to help keep a village church’s 125-year-old instrument in classic condition.
All proceeds from the 13-track
CD of organ music by Mr Roger Britnell, of Read, will go towards the upkeep of the historic Lay- cock organ, which has been in St Nicholas’s Church, in Wesley Street, Sabden, since it was made by John Laycoek in 1879. The songs will range from 16th
Century English and French tra ditional tunes to more modern- day music. Mr Britnell has been playing the organ for 26 years and has
been organist at St Nicholas for several years. He said: “The music has been picked to show off the potential of the instrument. It is not big, but it sounds it.”
The CD will be available to
order from the church or from Mr Britnell, on 07901 865238, and costs £9. All the money raised will go towards restoration of the organ, which costs a minimum of £500 every year. A free concert with a perfor
mance of tracks from the CD will be held at the church hall on Fri day, March 4th, at 7-30 p.m. Our picture shows Mr Britnell with the organ. (G220205/4)
the road and another tanker was sent to the site to pump out the contents. Mr McGrath described the
smell of the blood as horren dous and said it would have been disastrous if it had spilled on to the road. Police have launched an
appeal to determine how the accident happened and sus pect another vehicle may have been involved. Anyone with information is
asked to call the road policing unit on 01254 353767. Our picture shows the scene
of devastation caused by the accident. (B160205/4b)
