A REGISTERED childminder has admitted killing a baby boy who drowned in the bath while
she was drunk. Wendy Barlow, a 37-year-old
mother-of-three, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 19-month old Joshua James Massey Hodgkinson between April 15th and 18th last year. Barlow, of Eightacre Avenue, Sab-
den, had previously entered a not guilty plea to the charge and was due to face trial in April. The child had been staying at her
home while his mother. Miss Emma Massey, of Clitheroe, had a Friday night out with friends. Police and paramedics were later
called to Barlow’s semi-detached home shortly before 3 a.m. where they found Joshua’s body in the bed room. He was subsequently taken to

would receive a prison sentence. Michael Shorrock QC, for the
prosecution, said Barlow had been grossly negligent in allowing the boy to drown. A Home Office Pathologist for the
Crown Dr Philip Lumb said it was not possible to determine how long Joshua would have been under water, but said that it was likely that "the drowning process would have taken a couple of minutes of unin terrupted complete immersion. "Whether 30 seconds or 120 sec
onds does not detract from the defendant's gross negligence in allowing a 19-month-old child to drown in the bath," he told the court.
Judge Peter Openshaw QC asked
for background reports, and Barlow was remanded on bail until Tuesday, March 22nd, when she will be sen tenced. Miss Massey and Joshua’s father,
Simon Hodgkinson, also of Clitheroe, were both in court on Monday for the 15-minute hearing. The couple this week spoke to
senior reporter JULIE MAGEE about their year of anguish. • For the full story see page three.
