NOWHERE is the pace of mod ern automotive development quite so obvious than in the field of diesel engines. Drive a diesel th a t seemed
state-of-the-art a couple of years ago and it no longer seems any thing like as clever. This would seem to put the TDi engines fitted to Skoda’s latest Octavia Estate at something of a disadvantage, developed as they are from exist ing power plants. The rest of the Octavia package has been shown to be well up to speed but what of these diesels? First shown at the Paris Show

in September 2004, the Octavia estate is a good deal sleeker and more rounded than its rather set- square predecessor. Built on the same platform as the hatchback model, the Octavia estate eschews the current trend for long wheel base estate versions and instead concentrates on offering solid value for money and practical interior solutions rather than headline grabbing gimmickry. A split/fold rear bench isn’t the most exciting feature but it can free up a huge amount of space - some 1,620 litres all in - and even with the seats in place, there’s 580 litres available to stuff with bags. That’s fully 32 litres more than the old car despite the latest model looking a good deal sporti er.

the X3 makes the car a good deal more a ttrac tive although i t ’s worth remembering that few will pay the £26,175 asking price, instead cranking i t nearer the £30,000 mark with various options. Quality doesn’t come for free however, and the X 3 is undoubtedly the best compact 4x4 on sale today by a country mile. good deal smoother than the 1.9- litre engine, especially from stand- w still. Secondly i t ’s Euro IV com pliant, which will be a deal maker ^ for company car user/choosers w because the 1.9-litre only manages this feat when coupled with the pricey DSG twin clutch gearchange borrowed from Audi. These would seem to be convinc ing arguments but the 1.9-litre model will doubtless rack up the numbers.
