IF there is one aspect of weddings that brides worry about, it is whether to invite their friends’ children, knowing they may scream throughout the cere mony. If you are inviting children to your wed

ding but are worried about how to ensure they do not ruin your special day, I have listed some tips below. • During the ceremony give the children

a small bag with perhaps a small puzzle and a small box of raisins. 9 Ask the photographer to have one pic

ture of all the children together - they will love being the centre of attention and involved in such an important way. • If you have a mum with a young baby

then check whether she needs somewhere to feed the baby and/or change nappies. O During the drinks reception, have a

table set to one side and cover with paper (to protect the venue’s furniture). Then provide the children with crayons, pencils and one large sheet of paper, ask all the children to draw a picture and hand to the best man when finished. The bride and

groom could then keep as a memento of the day. • If you have a lot of children why not

organise a treasure hunt with one of the ushers in charge?

’ ' On the guest tables have a small box or

bag with a balloon, raisins, small chocolate bar and small toy suitable for their age. This should quieten them during the speeches! • If you have older children, why not set |

up a small room with computer games, puz zles and board games. • Buy a pifiatas - these originate from

America and Mexico but are now available from on-line children’s websites. Made from papier-mache they are available in many designs, even wedding ones, although tradi-! tionally it was always the donkey! Fill with 1 small toys and sweets - if you have younger children then make sure you buy one with pull strings which are far safer. • Finally, if money is not an object and

you really want some peace and quiet, hire | a wedding creche service. They will enter- j tain the children and you won’t even know | they are there!

Ido again

THERE were 109,090 remarriages in 2003, which accounts for just over two-fifths of all marriages in Britain. “Any wedding is a landmark in the fami

ly, but a second wedding throws up a whole set of completely different issues,” explains Jill Curtis, psychotherapist and author of “How To Get Married Again - A Guide To Second Weddings.” “They do say that there’s no wedding

without some tears beforehand, but second weddings require even more sensitive and careful planning,” she advises. “Second weddings can also stir up a lot of

memories from the past which people think they have completely got over and so it pays to bear in mind that emotions - on all sides - will be running high. “People who are getting married also get

terribly upset about etiquette, and the questions come thick and fast such as, ‘Should I invite my ex in-laws to see their grandchildren as my bridesmaid?’ for example.” Delicate preparation is the key, according

to Jill, and she believes that you should always tell your ex

partner and even for mer in-laws about plans for the new marriage. As for any chil

dren who are involved, a remar riage represents the time when all hope of the family getting back together is gone and so how the children are told is critical - it should never be through a public announcment or at a party. Jill advises that

children should always be involved in some part of the ceremony. Ministers at The

Church of England, Church in Wales and the Church of Scot land are now allowed to use their discre tion about marrying someone who is divorced. A priest will

remarry you if you are divorced and your previous mar riage was through a civil ceremony, or if your former partner is no longer living. However, there is a

special marriage tri bunal empowered to declare a previous marriage null and void, the dispensa tion of which comes from the Pope’s office.

Half-term goes international

THERE was a real international flavour at a half-term playscheme in Clitheroe. Every day of the school holiday, 40

youngsters took part in a range of activi ties at the Trinity Centre. Run by childcare co-ordinator Adele

Kitchen and her team, the theme for the scheme was “Countries”, with each day’s activities focusing on a different nationali ty including America and France.

Making mobiles of all things Australian

and eating Italian-themed food were among the variety of projects undertaken by the youngsters. The week culminated in a party and

disco where children displayed the flags they had designed and made. Our photograph shows Adele (left) and

childcare play worker Rebecca Magee at the end-of-scheme party. (S180205/3)
