LOW cloud and inist greeted 18 Clitheroe ramblers a t the s ta r t of their 11-mile walk from Gargrave to Flashy Fell. .. Led by Bryan Dobson, they fol
lowed a network of country roads and field tracks to the village of Esh- ton, which has many historic build ing including the 16th Century Esh-
ton Hall, the former home of Math ew Wilson, who was MP for Clitheroe in the mid-19th Century. A short coffee break was taken at
Friars Head, during which the leader took the opportunity of giving a brief history of the three medieval sites namely, St Helens Well, Pillow Mounds and th e Giants Graves,
which are evident at this point. After a short stroll through the hamlet of Flashy, the group reached the low lands of the Fell and, in poor visibili ty and with aid of satellite naviga tion, they climbed to Rough Haw, where lunch was taken. They then continued their climb to the summit of the fell, Sharp Haw,
but unfortunately the outstanding scenery normally experienced a t this p oint was no t evident. After descending, they made their way via Stirton before reaching the Leeds Liverpool Canal a t Thorlby. After enjoying the peacefulness of
the walk along the canal towpath the group came full circle to Gargrave.
