IT has been five years since we last saw the Vicar of Dibley and her parish
ioners on screen. _ But it seems little has changed in the lives
of chocoholic Geraldine, her dippy friend Alice and the men of the village who happily call themselves ‘a bunch of morons’, as they return in two seasonal specials - one on Christmas Day, and the second on New Year’s Day. Among tha t bunch of morons is Dibley

i But he’s still after her and still thinks he’s in i with a chance. Even after all these years he ! won’t take no for an answer.” I The long gap since we last saw the villagers 1 is mostly down to the busy schedule of writer j Richard Curtis. Having been involved in films such as “Bridget Jones’s Diary”'and writing and directing last year’s “Love Actually”, the mastermind behind the hit sitcom has been unable to spare any time for it until now. “He’s been pretty busy and we won’t do it
without him,” says 60-year-old Roger. “He’s got to be able to commit himself to time in the rehearsal room with us. He re-writes a lot as he goes on, he’s always tinkering right up to the last minute, so we need him there.” Although fans have been hankering after
new episodes of “The Vicar Of Dibley” for some time (“I was thrilled to finally be able to
i say, ‘Yes, we’re doing one’ and see people’s I faces light up rather than look sad,” says

favourite Owen Newitt, played by “Only Fools And Horses” star Roger Lloyd-Pack; For the past decade, Owen, the -village’s straight-talk ing, foul-smelling farmer, has had very open designs on Geraldine, played by Dawn French. “He’s still propositioning her, still suggest-
villagers organising celebrations to mark Geraldine’s 10-year anniversary as Dibley’s ■vicar. She manages to head off Owen’s sugges tion that she has a stripper at the Christmas Eve cocktail party, but of course there’s plenty more that doesn’t go to plan. “I think you’ll have to watch it to find out
what happens,” teases Roger. “There is a cer tain surprise element. But you can be sure Owen is involved in what goes on. And there’s various suggestions he makes for the celebra tions that are totally inappropriate. He’s got a few odd ideas.” Roger’s own Christmas will he spent at his
home in London with his wife, poet Jehane Markham, and his four children. But firstly he’s getting the family together for a trip to New York. “It’s just to have a look,” he says. “It is sud

a huge enterprise, and I ’ve never done any thing on this scale before. I ’ve got a decent sto ryline and, although i t ’s mainly the kids, I keep popping up as I organise the games they all play. 'They’re very good to work with. I’ve
been very impressed.” '
IT iss time for the locals to forget their trou bles and indulge in a bit of a knees-up in the village hall, in the “Heartbeat Christmas spe
cial” on ITVl on Boxing Day. So for actress Tricia Penrose, who plays bar maid Gina Ward, it means a performance on
stage. But it’s not the only musical turn we’ll get.
to see from Tricia that day - she’ll also be in a special edition of “ Stars In Their Eyes”. “I ’ll watch both shows, it will be a great
couple of hours. Tricia Penrose for two hours!” giggles the bubbly 34-year-old actress. “In Stars In Their Eyes I come on as Brenda Lee and sing ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas
Tree’. “I love it. As soon as I heard they wanted
me to do it I was over the moon and asking what I was singing and when I could start rehearsing. I don’t get embarrassed at all. Tricia reveals life at home with her husband
TV presenter Mark Simpkin, 32, and their 15- month-old son, Jake, is often a musical affair. “We have a mad karaoke for an hour in the
morning. We sit him on the pool table in the back room and he watches us. We’re the big kids, he doesn’t know what’s hit him that
child, I tell you!” ’
The couple are hoping to enlarge their brood but at the moment, their hands are full
'
with little Jake. “We definitely want at least two but we’re going to wait till Jake’s about three years old - we realise how hard work it
is. “Our house is not itself at the moment.
Gone are the ornaments. Everything’s got to be up high, even the Christmas treel “But Jake’s at a gorgeous age - he’s a little
ing Day episode, resplendent in a gold frock and matching shoes. “The dress is a bit OTT but it’s great for
Gina and for Christmas,” says Tricia. Although the actress says th a t Gina’s
wardrobe’s improving, she admits to having bit of trouble with her waistline. “I ’m fluctuating by the minute at the
terror and I love him to bits. I can’t wait till moment. I’m on Weight Watchers but I’m all
he understands Santa.” - As well as having a big change in her off screen life, Tricia’s onscreen “Heartbeat” life playing Gina has seen its fair share of ups and downs recently. Tragically her two-day-old daughter died and then her relationship mth PC Phil Bellamy collapsed. “I ’ve heard on good authority that in the
new series in September we’ll see Gina have some sort of breakdown. “I think it’s about time. She’s lost a two-
day-old baby and for it to be never spoken about again is a bit odd. . “I think Gina should settle down. I don’t
think she should be with Phil, I ’m pleased they split up, but I do think she should find a man. I want her to find someone and be dead happy, move out the pub, get a new house and
a different job.” Meanwhile, Gina’s forgetting her troubles
and singing her heart out in the special Box
over the place. “Over Christmas you’ve got all these dos
and you’re trying to fit into your little black dress but then you go to the parties and have a four-course meal and champagne, pile on the pounds and then you’re even bigger. You can’t win! It’s a bad time for diets. “I ’ve always had a bit of pot belly, even
before I had Jake. I ’ve got this paunch now where I ’ve had my Caesarean, which appar ently you don’t get rid of. “To he honest. I ’m not that bothered any
more,” she continues. “I t’s not as if I’m doing calendar shoots. If
I was then I’d be conscious of it, I ’d be at the gym every day and I ’d have a diet routine. But I’m not. I’m a mum and I ’m getting on a
bit now. . “When I got the gold frock on I had to do a
lot of breathing in and get the support tights out - it was a real Bridget Jones moment!”
