Dental surgery plan gets green light from planners

by Julie Magee

PLA N N ER S have ag re ed to grant permission in principle to build an NHS dental surgery at The Sidings Bus iness P a rk ,

Whalley. Members of Ribble Valley Bor

ough Council’s planning committee approved an application for outline planning permission to erect a two-

storey building with an NHS dental surgery on the ground floor. The plans also include administration offices on the first floor and a private car park on land at the northern most end of the park. At the last meeting of the commit

tee, members said they were minded to approve the application, but decided to defer it granting delegat ed authority to officers to impose appropriate conditions.

This most recent application rec

ommended outline permission be granted subject to numerous condi tions. Among these were that the ground floor of the building would be used for dentistry purposes only and th a t detailed plans, indicating design, external appearance, parking and access, would be approved by the committee before development started. Speaking at the meeting, applicant

Mr Andrew Ronnan, director of The Sidings (Whalley) Ltd, said the local primary care trust had given positive indications on funding. Mr Ronnan went on to say that he

would like to attract recent graduate dentists wanting to form a new prac tice in the area. Coun. Joyce Holgate wished Mr

Ronnan every luck in his new ven ture, especially if it would help local NHS dental provision.

Playgroup’s boost from a festive fund-raiser

SEASCNAL goodies were on sale at a Christ mas fair organised by staff at St Paul’s Play group, Clitheroe. The event attracted

more than 50 toddlers and parents and offered plenty of variety, includ ing a great mix of craft stalls plus refreshments. The atmosphere was

at its best when visitors dug deep into their pockets to take part in a tombola and youngsters were thrilled to bits when they heard an

early “ho ho ho” from Father Christmas, who handed out festive good ies.

The fun-packed event

raised £180, to be spent on presents for the chil dren and resources to fund the playgroup, which holds sessions three mornings a week a t St Paul’s Church Hall. Our picture shows

dren, spoke to us about what these presents mean to them and their families. “These presents will make a lot of difference to us. Without these parcels we really would have been struggling and they will make a real differ ence. We can now look for ward to seeing our children’s faces on Christmas Day. We just want to say thank you for helping us and thank you for giving us a Christmas,” one of them said This year’s Toy Appeal has

now finished, but any items taken to the Salvation Army will not be wasted, but put away for next year.

As well as delivering pre

sents, Salvation Army lead ers Capt. Elizabeth Smith and Lt Brenda Wise, togeth er with a team of volunteers have also been taking out 60 food parcels. These have been handed out to the elderly, those with special needs, peo ple with large families and those living on their own. The carrier bags were

donated by Booths and all the food was provided by pupils from four local schools - Ribblesdale High School Technology College, Moor land School, St James’ CE Primary School and Brook- side Primary School - tog

ether with other provisions donated by members of the public. Cash donations, which have also been grate fully received by the Salva tion Army, will be used to purchase fresh food in the run-up to Christmas. 9 There are still some

places available a t the Army’s special Christmas Day lunch. This free meal, which is being provided by Clitheroe Community Hos pital, is open to anyone who will be on their own on Sat urday. To enjoy this festive lunch and fellowship, simply contact Capt. Smith by ring ing her on 0770 9351394.
